Okaloosa County airport manager Coy Thomason announced the Federal Aviation Administration approved a $193,000 grant to fund new aircraft parking and stall lighting at Destin Airport. The project includes 10,000 square yards of paved parking on the airport's southwest side.
The Department of Natural Resources will hold a public hearing on January 8 at 7 p.m. at Okaloosa Island Holiday Inn to receive comment about beach access. Findings will be included in the DNR report to the governor and Cabinet on future steps for beach access.
The local American Cancer Society chapter needs a computer and asks for donations. A machine with two disk drives a printer and a CRT is requested. Call Susan Lockart at 244-3813 to donate and help with tax deduction timing.
Destin officials outline 1987 plans including a $435,000 aerial ladder truck for Station 7 on Airport Road. Delivery expected mid year with completion by February. Mayor and council foresee improved ISO rating, expanded manpower, and ongoing road and bridge projects in Destin.
Thousands of cannonball jellyfish washed ashore at Fort Walton Beach leaving beaches crowded with dead carcasses. Resident Don Heapy reports a massive influx seen early Saturday morning and lingering into Monday afternoon. He warns of potential health concerns if debris persists.
City officials seek EPA designation to curb sewage discharges in Destin Harbor. City Manager Jack Dorman and Harbor Master Mitch Dudley cite studies showing federal criteria met and plan to add pump-out facilities. If approved, governor requests designation. EPA acts within 90 days. Violations carry a $1000 fine and up to one year in prison.
Walton County Commission in a special session approves 9.8 million in industrial revenue bonds to finance Villa Bay Gardens a 248 unit retirement complex on a 17 acre site north of Emerald Coast Parkway. IMI Inc. of Indiana leads the project with Boetcher & Co. as bond purchaser. Clinic component begins first with completion in late 1987. full project expected by late summer 1988.
Destin saw a boom in new projects despite a slow market. Tidewater, a 433 acre cross-county development, won spring approval. Development Group bought 21,000 acres in South Walton in June. The Kelly Trust unveiled a 2000 acre tract plan in June. Riviera Plaza Hotel, budgeted at 75 million dollars, gained July approval.
In February DDIC submitted a petition signed by over ten percent of registered voters to City Council asking for a referendum on incorporation. The city sued March 21 claiming the petition invalid. In July Judge Jere Tolton ruled the petition invalid, with DDIC appealing in August.
