Winter blast freezes Destin as temperatures dip to eight degrees

Temperatures in Destin fell below nine degrees during a Christmas weekend cold snap. The Coast Guard Station recorded a low near eight degrees, while officials noted 28-degree readings at noon, with winds and ice causing broken water pipes and scarce heat. By Tuesday the 40s returned and utility crews worked to restore water pressure. Residents reported frozen pipes, widespread car battery issues, and the need for space heaters to stay warm.

Year of Progress for Destin Trails Community Growth

Destin, a community with no formal government, saw a year of rapid development led by volunteer groups like Preservation of Destin, Destin Community Center, and local Kiwanis and Rotary clubs alongside funded bodies such as Destin Water Users and the Chamber of Commerce. DWU faced pollution concerns in Old Pass Lagoon, earned a clean bill of health by July, purchased a fifth well site in September, and planned a lagoon-to-Holiday Isle pipeline. A new Eastwood Four sewer completed in November spurred eastward expansion talks toward Crystal Beach, while DWU pursued a third wastewater expansion and anticipated a fourth to address effluent disposal.
