A year ending 1986 reflects a regional downturn with fewer jobs and stalled development. The Log notes real estate advertising shrinking, empty storefronts, and cautious optimism for 1990 and beyond as tourism and growth slowly recover. Destin and South Walton are projected to continue growing despite the squeeze.
The article argues repeal of mandatory seat belt laws in Nebraska and Massachusetts will cost lives, contrasting public votes with safety data. It notes 26 states and DC had such laws since 1984, with 25 retaining them, while federal campaigns pushed safety education and states show front seat fatalities and injuries drop where belts are required.
Editorial argues voters backed the Florida Education Lottery to improve education and that revenue should be used for education only. It notes Governor elect Bob Martinez questions education use and cites Pat Tornillo of the Florida Education Association United warning against diversions to indigent health care or other programs.
In letters to The Log, Destin and Fort Walton Beach residents urge a park with no artery through Henderson Beach State Park. They argue Old 98 should be realigned to protect families and provide safer, patrolled beach access, warning that traffic and sirens threaten safety and park viability.
