Water supply crisis looms for Destin South Walton area
Northwest Florida Water Management District warns Destin and South Walton could face severe water shortages by 2020. A plan recommends sinking two well fields near Eglin Reservation to supply about 10 million gallons daily in the near term and shifting more capacity north toward Freeport as growth continues. District officials say the approach avoids saltwater intrusion and protects the Florida aquifer, with costs estimated at 10.6 million dollars funded by revenue bonds.
