Gas tax debate links federal aid to Florida road plan
State Rep James Ward says federal gas tax hike may still require a state levy to fund the four lane rerouting of U S 98 and the U S 331 bridge project. DOT seeks 300 million over five years with 150 million yearly from federal funds if the tax passes, split between repair and new construction. Ward cites hurdles in state matching funds and considers a wholesale gas tax as a pump price neutral option. Commissioner Anders agrees it’s time for state action.
