Jack Becklund warns August storms bring slippery roads from oil and grease, plus treacherous boating conditions from sudden squalls. Slow down, maintain lights and brakes, and give thunderstorms a wide berth. Stay alert for visitors and locals alike on roadways and waterways.
Editorial applauds halting the referendum on a county gasoline tax and urges immediate steps to craft a funded plan. It cites 1.6 million yearly potential from a gas levy for road work and a bridge, and calls for municipal agreement, clear fund usage, and a 4 to 6 cent rate to avoid tourism and business losses.
A local official reflects on mail campaigns backing the 911 emergency system and weighs a proposed new gas tax. He notes broad support for 911, uncertainty around the gas tax, and opposition from chambers, builders, and cities fearing higher costs. He questions whether local government should act against the majority.
A citizen urges residents to report sign tampering as signs are costly and taxpayers bear the cost. The letter praises the county decision to approve a gas tax funded by users, not property owners, and notes tourists help fund roads. A separate note thanks a good citizen who recovered a lost driver’s license mailed home by A To Z Lock and Safe.
