The Destin Chamber of Commerce promotes its annual membership drive with five prizes for signing new members. To qualify for the cruise prize, an individual must recruit 20 or more new members.
Helping Kids Warner Cable will sponsor the MDA fund raising drive again. Harry F Sheran, general manager of the Warneree system, said 50 percent of all cable installation fees over the next four weeks will be donated to Jerry's Kids. Warner Cable will offer discounts of 50 percent on new installations. Last year the company donated more than $300,000 nationally to MDA.
A Tuesday fire in a room adjacent to the Holiday Inn on U S 98 was extinguished within 10 minutes. No injuries were reported and damage was about 50 dollars. Officials believe a cigarette tossed on the roof of the electrical room started the blaze.

Okaloosa County Commissioner Bill Peebles Jr. says connecting Destin Water Users lines with county and other systems could guarantee a backup supply for Destin. County water administrator Robert McKinley reported meetings with DWU and South Walton Utilities to study crossing Okaloosa Island to the Destin Bridge and tying into DWU. Erik Smith of DWU said engineers are estimating costs and route options before seeking a state permit if feasible.
The Topsail Ltd files in Walton County Circuit Court a temporary injunction to stop a $5.775 million bond issue for Walton County regional water and sewer system phase two. The Texas firm alleges the county bypassed legal procedures and overpaid to acquire utility companies, risking higher charges for customers. Defendants include Walton County and several utility entities.
Destin Fire Chief Terry Watkins resigns after 14 years, handing the badge to Assistant Chief Hank Berry. Watkins will remain as volunteer assistant chief after a unanimous fire board vote. He calls the move a personal decision and thanks the department for support.
Destin City Hall buys a trained attack duck to guard ducks crossing Kelly Street after duck crossing signs were stolen. Public Works Director Barnhill joked the duck is trained by police and will be leashed to prevent public danger while standard replacement signs with anti vandal devices are installed. A $145 reward has produced no leads. New signs are expected by week’s end.
A Walton County seventh grader struggled with assignments and learning the alphabet. Dr. Diane Culver notes many local students are two or more years behind in reading but can be motivated by computer-based instruction that lets each child progress at his own pace.
The First Baptist Church of Fort Walton Beach runs English literacy classes for military wives and other internationals. Wanida Young of Thailand credits the program with boosting confidence and teaching practical words to communicate. The church serves learners from beginners to those who need reading and writing skills in English.
