Giant Blue Marlin Weighs 1601 Pounds Off Louisiana Coast
Echoes’ Tom Whitmore and Capt. Danny Smith’s crew hauled a 14 foot long blue marlin with an eight foot girth 109 miles southeast of the Mississippi River off the Louisiana coast. The fish weighed 1601 pounds after measurements in Destin, with the crew noting a possible additional weight had a two inch difference been found. The marlin’s death is attributed to choking on an 80 pound tuna during line fishing and rapid decomposition limited what could be kept for mounting.
