Centel will assign the 654 prefix to Destin residents as growth expands. Spokesman Steve Chew said 654 has been used for over a year for large business blocks like condominiums while the 837 prefix nears 90 percent of its 10 000-number capacity.
Okaloosa County health officials lifted the June 26 rabies alert after 30 days with no rabid animals found. Spokesman Doug Sims cautioned owners to keep pets leashed or fenced and noted releases from veterinarians allow pets to travel out of state or country.
In Fort Walton Beach a construction crew severed a telephone line near Chicago Avenue causing Destin residents to lose access to in and out of town calls for about an hour between 9 and 10 a.m. The outage was fixed after Center crews located and repaired the damaged cable, restoring service shortly after 10 p.m.
The forecast calls for mid 90s temperatures with a heat index around 105 to 107. Winds will be variable near 10 mph. A 50 percent chance of afternoon thunderstorms exists. The extended outlook shows partly cloudy skies with scattered storms likely. Temperatures trend mid to upper 90s, then lower 90s Sunday through Tuesday.
