Warm humid spell with mean temperatures 12 degrees above normal followed by a cool dry period. Light showers, sunshine 6 percent above normal. Crops and grasses mostly good to excellent. pastures generally good but need rain, except Grantsville district excellent. Haying plowing and sowing prep active. Wheat in Grantsville, rye in Northeast, barley and winter oats in Queen Anne, rye cover crop in Delmar. Early corn being cut, late corn maturing. tomatoes and sugar corn for markets and canneries. Tomato picking ending. some canneries closing on the Eastern Shore. Late potato digging in Western Maryland. central and eastern divisions show good tuber development, Northeast poorer. Sweet potatoes and tobacco cutting ongoing. Peach picking ended in western section. continues in eastern Washington County. Autumn apples being picked in western Maryland, central and eastern divisions. Kieffer pears picked. Grapes cut at Chewsville. apples at Joppa. Silos filling. rot among tomatoes and late potatoes noted. some celery blighted. Buckwheat cut. some early sown wheat up at Grantsville. Alfalfa cut at Chewsville. Spinach beds many at Joppa. Horvath Wins Maryland State Scholarship for 1942
John George Horvath of Henderson is named Maryland's 1942 college scholarship winner by LSC. He will enter the University of Maryland College of Agriculture this fall to study agricultural education. Horvath, a Future Farmers of America member, raised swine and tomatoes in projects, won the 1941 FFA public speaking contest, and held posts in FFA, student government, and church youth groups while excelling in soccer and softball. He urges defense bonds and stamps purchases.

Small Farmer Making Record Loan Repayments in 11-State Area
Caroline County FSA supervisor Thomas C Cruikshank reports record loan repayments by small farmers. Last week repayments reached 934.21 and 1093.49 the prior week, up nearly 50 percent from last year, with 109 farmers aided locally.
