Weather Warmth Boosts Crops Across the Region
This week was warm with mean temperature seven degrees above normal and light rain on several days. Crops pastures and grasses are mostly good to excellent. haying plowing and sowing of grains continue. Wheat sown at Grantsville rye at Joppa barley at Northeast and other grains across multiple Maryland sites. Harvest activities include oats threshing in Grantsville corn cutting in Allegheny Mountain region and widespread tomato and sugar corn picking for canneries and markets. Late potato plants are vining heavily at Lincoln Delaware. sweet potatoes maturing on the Eastern Shore. Apple and pear supplies good while late apples strong. silos filling and alfalfa near fourth cutting at Keedysville. Beetles damage late beans at Joppa. clover and soybeans progressing in various counties.
