Denton Lions Club announced a Fire Prevention Poster Contest ending October 9 1948 with $10 for first prize $5 for second and $2 50 for third. Judge T Alan Goldsborough spoke at the bi monthly meeting on September 21 praising the drafting work for the U S Constitution.
Miss Eunice Hayes state Young People's Secretary conducted a coronation for seven G A girls after church decor featured green and white streamers. Lois Passwaters advanced to Junior G A s as others received arm bands and lit candles. A Maryland camp film and home mission stories followed with offerings for Maryland Young People s work. The W M A met, elected officers led by President Mrs Preston Spiener, and adjourned with prayer.
Camden-Wyoming and Greensboro reached the Mar Del League finals after sweeping Ches town and Rock Hall in weekend semi finals. Camden-Wyoming beat Chestertown 4 1 as McGillen fanned 12 over six hits, with Straccione driving in two. Greensboro edged Rock Hall 2 1 in 15 innings as Phillips delivered a clutch hit and strong relief to seal the sweep at Greensboro A.A. Park. The opening game Sunday at Dover Park 2:30 p.m. pits Camden-Wyoming and Greensboro with a possible third game if needed.
Playtex employees and guests filled the Dover High School social hall for the Homecoming party opening the season. International Latex staff returned from paid vacations of up to three weeks to renew acquaintances and meet new hires. Dancing to Woody Leigh and his orchestra ran from 8 p m to midnight with refreshments served.
At a recent meeting the Easton Shore Soccer League elected Fred Lucas of Cambridge as president for the coming year and Everett C. Townsend of Denton as vice president. J Malcolm Bye of Denton was named secretary and G Linden Duffy of Greensboro treasurer. Raymond Beauchamp of Denton was chosen as delegate to state meetings. Representatives from many towns adopted league by laws and a schedule for eight clubs is expected for opening October 10. Denton lacks a club as no manager is named. a Denton meeting at Roy’s Barber Shop at 8 p.m. tonight is urged.
The Caroline County Nurses' Board marks its 26th year with a Sept 21 meeting in Denton hosted by Mrs. Harry Nuttle. The board, started in 1922, supports public health nurses, coordinates with the County Health Association, runs Tag Day fund drives, folds dressings, and appoints monthly reps to assist nurses. Members hope for a full-time Health Officer and met with cake and fruit juice afterward.
The 168th anniversary services at Barratt's Chapel near Frederica will feature Rev Essell P Thomas superintendent of the Easton district Peninsula Methodist Conference as speaker The services start at 230 pm and musical features include the Wesley Methodist Church male quartet Dover with pianist Mrs Harry Clark The program lists greetings by Dr T C Mulligan and prayer by Rev Roy T Thawley
The Rt. Rev. William McClelland bishop of the Episcopal diocese of Easton Maryland is in critical condition at Delaware Hospital Wilmington Delaware He was brought to the hospital on Tuesday while visiting Dr C W Clash rector of Emanuel Episcopal Church Wilmington and became ill
Denton and most of the country will switch to Standard Time on Sunday morning. Clocks are scheduled to fall back one hour at 2 a.m. though many public clocks will be set back 60 minutes on Saturday night.
The Rev. Dr. Ernest C Hallman a noted Methodist historian and former superintendent in Dover and Middletown districts died Wednesday at Beebe Hospital Lewes after a long illness. He was 62. Funeral Saturday at 1 pm from Windsor Funeral Home Laurel with interment in Bethel Cemetery New Castle County. He authored The Garden of Methodism and served as Peninsula Methodist Historical Society president. He studied at Taylor University and served in multiple charges from 1910 onward, retiring last spring. He leaves wife May, two sons J Raymon Hallman Seaford and Harold Hallman Ocean City Md, three grandchildren and a brother J Raymond Hallman Chesapeake City Md.
A birthday dinner honoring Ernest Downes for his 77th birthday was hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Downes near Ingleside. Numerous relatives from Henderson, Church Hill, Preston, Harmony, Greensboro, Goldsboro, and Wyoming attended, gifting him well wishes and presents.
President Truman addressed about 200 rural electrification leaders from New England and the Middle Atlantic at a Washington banquet on September 16 during a two day NRECA meeting. He urged continued expansion until every farm has power and modern amenities, noting his own farm experience. The event, part of discussions with REA and government officials, covered power shortages and co op ownership, with region leaders like Gordon Loveless and Harry H Nuttle participating. Milford Red Sox win Eastern Shore League title 13 8 over Cambridge Dodgers to claim the Presidents Cup and league crown.
A Denton crowd pleaser is billed as the Atomic Bomb of Amateur entertainment with a two night show at Caroline High School on September 30 and October 1 at 7 49 p m. The program features ten scenes impersonating radio and stage stars with audience participation and a baby contest for local youngsters up to six sponsored by merchants. Prizes include silver, nylon hose, and corsages with King and Queen of Toyland titles awarded Friday night. Proceeds go to the Legion Home Fund. inquiries to Miss M Edythe Crayton at the Brick Hotel.
