Atomic Bomb Expert Addresses Rotary

Major Lawrence L. Grattan, former Manhattan Project engineer, told the Denton Rotary Club that the United States now has an atom bomb one hundred times more powerful than the Japan weapon. He said Baltimore blast effects would not reach Denton and emphasized security in ongoing atomic research. He was introduced by O. E. Roberts.

Missionary Education Seminars in Church Hill and Cambridge

National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week

The Congress and President designate October 3 to 9 as National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week. Francis A. Laskowski of the Division of Employment Service says the agency has placed in jobs all the handicapped in their files in the past year and urges employers to hire such applicants. Employers with openings should refer applicants to the Division of Employment Service at 101 Race Street Cambridge or the Denton Armory on Wednesdays for job assistance, to benefit employers, applicants, and the community.

Hickman and Lewes Reach Sussex Finals in Three-Game Series

Lewes A A and Hickman A A from the Sussex County League finished third and fourth and meet in a three game playoff final. Lewes beat Milton A A 1 to 0 in ten innings after splitting the series, while Hickman defeated Milford Vets 13 to 9 in a slugfest. The first game is slated for Sunday at Rehoboth Beach.

L H Thomas Named Easton Barrack Commander

Sergeant Leander H. Thomas, son of Hobbs residents, is appointed Barrack Commander of Barrack I near Easton effective today. He replaces First Sergeant James C. Latham who resigns to become service manager for Noble Motor Company. Lt. Randall praises Latham as a dedicated officer with an outstanding record in major crimes and finger printing classes.

Health Officer To Be Named Here In Caroline County

Caroline County commissioners agreed to fund a full time public health officer with 1700 dollars toward salary, joining 5500 dollars from the state. A delegation of about 30 civic representatives pressed for the appointment after Dr Cr Hupp was introduced by Dr Robert H Riley of the Maryland Public Health Department. The post has been vacant since Dr Walter B Johnson’s resignation. Dr Henry B Smith serves as acting deputy. Also present were James P Slicher and Dr Harry B Smith. The delegation included Rotary, Lions, Chamber of Commerce, Medical Society, Farm Bureau, Community Club, schools and others representing all parts of the county. Girl Scouts Plan Fall Program and Week Activities

The Girl Scouts met Monday evening September 27 at Mrs. E. T. Orme's home to discuss fall plans and activities for Girl Scout Week from October 31 to November 6. The Brownie troop will meet Thursday September 30 and the Intermediates will meet Tuesday October 5.
