Bishop Hughes Urges Three Christian Habits at Denton
Bishop Edwin Holt Hughes of Washington spoke at the 128th anniversary of First Methodist Church in Denton. He urged three habits: church attendance, giving to the church, and prayer, warning that neglect could lead to social decay and a crisis in public morality. He cited examples from his own life and from Catholic and French practices to illustrate the habit of praying. The event included Rev. John E. French and Dr. J. Earl Cummings, with Mr. and Mrs. Richard Turner as guest musicians.

18th Century Estate Sold Last Tuesday
A 218 acre Denton area tract long held by the Anthony family sold at public auction in front of the courthouse. Mrs. Joseph M. Tonis of New York City bought it for 7300 to extend her adjoining estate. The property includes an 18th century house built in 1776 once occupied by the late Joseph Anthony and a newer tenant house. A slight will technicality prompted sale of a half interest by Wesley E. Thawley as trustee for Octavia Anthony Moore and Robert Moore of Denton. A 127 acre farm between Ridgely and Greensboro owned by Frank P. Simons sold to Rosa Goad of Wilmington for 3800. it features a two story eleven room dwelling and a barn burned earlier.

Navy Horst arrives home from overseas service
Ralph E. Horst Coxswain returned August 2 after seventeen months abroad in Africa and Southern Europe and participation in three invasions and one major battle. He reported back to duty at Norfolk after a thirty two day leave. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ira J. Horst, born in Hagerstown Maryland, and enlisted October 15 1942 leaving his job as an inspector for the Electric Hose and Rubber Company Wilmington to join the Navy.

High School Equivalency Examinations Announced
The next series of high school equivalency exams will be held Thursday and Friday October 26 and 27, under Dr Earle T Hawkins of the State Department of Education. Applications must be submitted by October 1. Tests cover standard high school subjects and lead to Certificates of Equivalence usable for further study or professional entry. Examinations occur in Baltimore City and county seats with state residents eligible. age 19 minimum and one year Maryland residence required. Armed forces provisions apply. Milton Blockston of Ridgely, grandson of Mr and Mrs William Walls, was inducted into the U S Army on February 9 1943 in Baltimore and sent to Camp Meade Maryland then to Vancouver Washington for training. He later went to Camp Sutton North Carolina for a 10 day furlough then returned to Camp Sutton. He departed New York for overseas duty in early September 1943, trained in Northern Ireland and is now somewhere in England.

Greensboro Boy Helps Make Enviable Air Force Record
Private Frank Zarea of Greensboro serves in an Eighth Air Force Fighter Station group in England that surpassed 450 Nazi-plane victories, the third American fighter group in the European Theater of Operations to reach that mark. The ordnance worker contributed to the group’s high combat efficiency as pilots destroyed 44 enemy planes on the ground and seven in the air in one mission, plus four low level attacks totaling 118 German planes destroyed on the ground. Zarea enlisted in March 1943.

Enrollment Remains Steady at Caroline High School
Caroline High School reports total enrollment of 364 students with 172 in grades 8–11 and 192 in grades 4–7. Denton Primary shows 179 students with 67 in first grade, 64 in second, and 49 in third. Lieutenant Thomas Gray Jr. of Goldsboro serves with a Twelfth Air Force B-25 Mitchell group ferrying and bombing missions in support of D-Day Southern France invasion from a Corsica base. The unit joined Tunisia Sicily and Italy campaigns, striking German gun positions and transport links. Gray, a Navy draftsman in civilian life, is part of the ongoing air effort. The 164th anniversary of Barratt's Chapel Church near Frederica Delaware will be observed September 24 at 2:00 p.m.

Clendaniel Promoted To Lieut Colonel In Maryland Guard
Governor Herbert R. O Conor announced promotions in the Maryland State Guard after exams before the Board of Officers. Major George W. Clendaniel of Denton and Major Ernest C Merkel of Baltimore were promoted to Lieut Colonel. Clendaniel becomes Commanding Officer of the 5th Battalion in Chestertown, Merkel takes command of the 1st Battalion with headquarters in the Fifth Regiment Armory.
