Barratt's Chapel 166th Anniversary Service

The 166th Anniversary Service of Barratt's Chapel Methodist Church will be held Sunday September 29 at 2 00 p m The speaker will be Rev T C Mulligan superintendent of the Dover District of the Peninsula Conference of the Methodist Church The soloist will be Rev E E Coleman minister of Middletown Methodist Church Barratt's Chapel is the oldest Methodist place of worship still standing in America except St George in Philadelphia It has been in continuous use since the first Quarterly Conference held there by Francis Asbury November 4 1780 It was here Asbury and Coke met It was here the Lord's Supper was first celebrated by an ordained Methodist minister in America It was at Barratt's Chapel that plans were made November 14 1784 for the Christmas conference in Baltimore where the Methodist Church was organized in America A cordial welcome is extended to everyone.

Caroline High Starts Soccer Schedule

Caroline High School opens its 1946 soccer schedule with a home game against Greensboro this Friday at 1 30 p m on the Denton high school field. After wartime coaching shortages, county and state schedules return as veterans boost teams, with Denton bolstered by a new Army coach and several new players. The squad aims for county and regional playoffs and invites community support for a strong season.

Dover Horse Show To Be Held Oct 6 1946

The Kent Horse Show Association will stage a horse show on October 6, 1946, one mile south of Dover on route 113. Twenty one classes cover all riding horses and ponies with extra events in harness and exhibition acts. Prizes are trophies and ribbons in each class, judged by noted horse authorities Robert Herald of Leetonia Ohio and F John Tollen Jr of Erie Pa, owner of Buckeroo the Inner State Open Jumper Champion.

Legion Post 29 Plans Caroline County Soccer Team

Members of Caroline County American Legion Post 29 anticipate entering a team in the Eastern Shore Soccer League for the coming season. Plans call for six teams in each regional division with a state championship series after the sectional play. All service men in the county may join, and players must attend a meeting at the Armory in Denton at 8 p.m. on September 25.

Hartly and Rock Hall reached the Mar Del League finals after weekend wins. Rock Hall beat Denton 16 to 8 in Rock Hall with a 10 run first inning rally. Hartly defeated Camden-Wyoming 3 to 0 behind Earl Hummell's pitching and key hits.

Eastern Shore Soccer League Reorganizes At Meeting Here

The Eastern Shore Soccer League held a reorganization meeting at the Brick Hotel in Denton Maryland on September 13 1946. Acting chairman J Eugene Ringsdorf announced temporary leadership while teams from Ridgely St Michaels Chestertown Denton and others discussed affiliate deadlines fees and upcoming meetings with a $5 admission for club entry.

Gospel Quintette At Greensboro Baptist Church

The Eppley Sisters Gospel Quintette from Manchester Pennsylvania will perform at Greensboro Baptist Church on September 29 at 2 30 p m They present a spiritual program with vocal quintets alto solos skilled piano on vibra harp violin electric Hawaiian guitar saxophone accordions and cathedral chimes The sisters have appeared in 35 denominations over five years and have toured churches and radio in the United States and Canada Many have heard them with crowds often at capacity and some were turned away Some are Wheaton College graduates and others from the Dunmire School of Music All are currently vocal students at Messiah Bible College The public is invited and urged to arrive early.

State Style Review Champion Charlotte Lister Wins Trip

Charlotte Ann Lister of Ridgely daughter of Mr and Mrs Henry B Lister won first place in the State Style Revue at College Park in August. Her prize is a free trip to the National Club Congress in Chicago next December sponsored by the American Viscose Company.

Health Department Urges Diphtheria Immunization Here

Two diphtheria cases were reported to the Health Department from the Denton area in ten days. The department emphasizes vaccination for all children from six months to school age who have not had complete immunization in the past two to three years. Unvaccinated children should receive two doses a month apart. previously immunized youngsters may need one dose now.

Sherwood Brothers Celebrated Golden Anniversary This Week

John W. Sherwood founded Sherwood Brothers Inc in 1896 and marked the firms fiftieth birthday on September 19. The Baltimore based company grew from a waterfront outfit into a Maryland wide distributor of Betheline motor fuel and Sinclair products with 25 branch plants and 900 stations. The firm helped pioneer filling stations and supplied lubricants to ships and wartime forces before expanding into oil heating serving over 15,000 Maryland homes.

Caroline Legion Wins High Honors At Maryland Convention

Caroline Post 29 of Caroline County American Legion earned top state recognition for membership growth and a national Distinguished Service Certificate at the Maryland state convention in Cumberland. Delegates J E Downes and G W Clen daniel received a Membership Trophy and the certificate for 1945 member in good standing for 1946 by November 11 1945. The post plans a Dutch Treat banquet at Shamrock Inn on Kent Island October 5 to celebrate and display trophies countywide.
