Woman Social Worker Slain By Father Of 8 In Dover
Ruth Reinecke, 50, a Dover State Welfare case worker, was shot and killed by Thomas Griffith, 49, father of eight, after an investigation at the Griffith home near Sandtown Kent County. Griffith told police he killed her because she planned to take his children away. He surrendered at the Kent County Courthouse and was arraigned on murder charges as officers noted prior welfare petitions seeking custody for Griffith’s children and his wife. The tragedy unfolded after Miss Reinecke had previously inspected the family and Griffith’s mother in law and children were at the home. Coroners and officials described the sequence of shots through the car windshield and windows, leaving Reinecke mortally wounded. Miss Reinecke, born in York Pennsylvania, had a long career in social work and education, with ties to the Western Maryland Graduate and Wilmington schools, and leaves several siblings.
