Church Of The Brethren Council Meeting In Denton

Denton Church of the Brethren held a council meeting with Rev. Walter K. Mahan as moderator. A new Allen Electric Organ will be purchased and installed soon under Ruth Holsinger's Music Committee. Officers for the coming year to start Oct 1 include Mahan as moderator and many appointed posts. Pastor Galen R. Blough is on a business trip in Pennsylvania.

Maryland Corn Crop Forecast Sets Record High

Maryland's 1959 corn crop is forecast at 30,120,000 bushels, 5% above the 1956 record, with soybean output at 4,200,000 bushels. Despite a summer drought reducing some yields, overall per acre drops are offset by a larger harvest area. tobacco yields rise modestly to 32,375,000 pounds. Hay production continues. Public safety message urges drivers to protect children as school starts.

USDA Sets Recommended Decision on Federal Milk Order

The U S Department of Agriculture signed a recommended decision on the Upper Chesapeake Bay Federal Milk Marketing Order on September 15 1959. It upholds the original proposal and sets a base rating with minimum prices of 5.55 per hundredweight for eight months and 5.10 for March through June. The area includes 14 Maryland counties plus Laurel and various ports, with exceptions for Northern Frederick County and Camp Ritchie. Parties may file exceptions by October 3.

Bridgetown Church to Mark 181st Anniversary

Bridgetown Methodist Church near the Caroline line in Queen Anne’s County celebrates its 181st anniversary on Sept 27 at 2 30 pm with Rev Dr S R Latham as speaker. Ridgely Church choir and soloist Janet Woodward provide music. WSCS plans food for all after services.

WSCS To Open Fall Season With Covered Dish Supper

The Woman's Society of Christian Service of First Methodist Church opens its fall season with a covered dish supper in Fellowship Hall on Tuesday Sept 22 at 6 30. Guests include Mrs Walter B Palmer Sr and Mrs H F Chandler along with local society past presidents. Members are urged to call for an approximate headcount to ensure suitable arrangements.

Mardela District Women Plan Supper for Camp Mardela

The Mardela District Women of the Church of the Brethren announce a gala public supper at Krabill Hall Camp Mardela on September 30 from 4 to 7 30 pm. Proceeds fund pool improvements with an estimated $1 000 needed. food donated by seven district churches. Feed Service Men Conference Draws 200 At U M Campus

More than 200 attended the University of Maryland Conference for Feed Service Men on September 9 and 10 at College Park. Dr. H. D. Smith noted Delmarva’s 1958 broiler output and soybean oil meal use, citing freight and storage issues, rising efficiency, and industry expansion amid wage pressures in southern broiler areas. Specialists from U M and other institutions shared insights on nutrition, management, and disease control.

Grand Jury Report on Caroline County Juvenile Delinquency

The 1959 April term grand jury for Caroline County Maryland reviewed juvenile delinquency concerns and urged local lawmakers to consider curfew laws for under 16, a ban on public drinking, stricter drunken driving checks, and reforms to welfare and unemployment laws. Committees audited county offices noting needed repairs to ceilings, walls, lighting, and facilities. recommendations included improved maintenance, parking, and cleanliness across buildings.

Shore District Women's Club Board To Meet 24th

More than 100 clubwomen are expected for a board of directors meeting of the Eastern Shore District Maryland Federation of Women's Clubs on Thursday Sept 24 in Ocean City. District president Mrs K T Everngam will open reports at 11 am at the Hastings Miramar Hotel with luncheon to follow. Guest speaker will be Mrs John P Kauffman vice president of the State Federation. A Q A will follow. Everngain will note the fall annual district meeting set for Nov 5 in Salisbury hosted by the Tri-County Progress Club.

County Roads Board Report Praises New Building and Jail Conditions

On September 14 1959 the County Roads Board and Jail Committee found the new county office and stock yard adequately lighted heated and neat. They commend County Engineer Paul Yoash for reclaiming swamp land by tiling and filling. The jail inspection noted 14 colored men 2 colored women and 3 white prisoners. praised painting by prisoners but flagged fire hazard from wood stairs and deplorable bedding and eating facilities recommending Army surplus mattresses divided trays and updated plumbing and showers. noted one toilet awaiting repair. County Farm Crops and Committee Report

Grand Jury from the County Grand Jury inspected the County Farm. Crops shown include 29 acres corn 28 acres wheat 11 acres barley 17 acres soy beans. Revenue exceeds expenses. Two Jailed Last Week One On Suspended License

Ernest Lankford of Denton was sentenced to 30 days for a unemployment compensation fraud conviction after paying only 25 of 120.50 in fines. Robert L Williamson received a 30 day mandatory term for driving on a revoked license. Edward F Nickel of Federalsburg found guilty of assault and non support with a small fine. Percy L Freeman fined 35 for loaning his driver’s license and Joseph B Dill paid 10 for failing to grant right of way.
