Wheat Planting Window Warns Caroll Farmers
The county agent advises sowing wheat after the hessian fly free date of October 6 to avoid damage. Flies lay eggs on new wheat before this period, and early plantings suffer heavy infestation. Maggots feed between stem and leaves, causing dark green leaves that stand upright and may split the stand. A 1951 survey across seven Maryland counties shows average 5 percent damage, with some farms over 20 percent infestation.
