Denton commissioners meet at the fire house next Tuesday September 7 at 7 30 p m to discuss sewer and drainage on South Fourth street and between the Button Factory and Seventh street on Carter avenue.
A Denton Chamber of Commerce gathering in the fire house discussed town needs including six street trash baskets, improved Denton telephone service, countywide reach, and street signs. President Winfield Nichols and Secretary Robert Downes led the session, with votes to purchase baskets and to pursue better waste collection and communications facilities.
Maryland opens hunting seasons September 1 to October 1 for Rails and Gallinules with daily limits plus a one day aggregate bag for King Rail Virginia Rail Clapper Rail and Gallinules. Mourning Doves run September 1 to October 15 with a 10 bird limit and no Sunday hunting. Squirrels allow September 15 to 30 with a 6 per day limit.
The Mar Del League All Star game is set for Dover Phillies Park Tuesday at 8:30 p m. Maryland stars from Chestertown Rock Hall Greensboro and Denton meet Delaware reps from Camden Wyoming Hardy Hartly Houston and Felton with managers Bob Lord Stan Mikell and others coordinating. final rosters pending selection.
Norm Zauchin of Milford is Eastern Shore League MVP and first team at 1B, leading in runs batted in homers doubles and total bases. Salisbury dominates with five players on the all star squad. Gene Corbett of Salisbury named manager of the mythical nine.
County schools will begin on Tuesday September 7. They will operate on Standard Time. Pupils must be six by January 1 1949 with no exceptions. All first time entrants must show proof of successful smallpox vaccination.
William S. Merriken of Denton, a five year pilot for American Overseas Air Lines from La Guardia, is promoted to captain and assigned to operate a line ship from Frankfurt via the Russian corridor to Berlin. He and his crew depart New York August 27, based in Frankfurt, flying Berlin runs until October 1 with 70 000 lbs gross weight per trip. His wife, Josephine Welch of Galena Maryland, will split time between Denton and Galena until his return.
Mr. James P. Hill of Elkins Park Pennsylvania has been appointed Supervisor of Pupil Personnel by the Caroline County Board of Education. He arrives after two and a half years as a counselor at Temple University Guidance Center with the Veterans Administration where he advised over a thousand servicemen. He holds a BS in Education from Temple Teachers College 1939 an MA in Education from Temple 1947 and has a background in counseling psychology. He and his wife and daughter plan to reside in Denton Maryland.
Private First Class Robert C. Smith graduated August 17 from the Air Force communications school at Scott Air Force Base Illinois. He was trained as a control tower operator and will be assigned to an Air Force installation to direct local air traffic for safer flying operations. Smith, 19, is the son of Mr and Mrs Irvin Smith of Denton. He enlisted February 3 1948 and trained at Lackland Air Base prior to Scott.
State income tax receipts totaling 4 543 402 38 were distributed among Maryland towns and counties in 1948 under the Sherbow plan. Baltimore City received 2 372 132 44, with the Eastern Shore showing Wicomico 55 556 71 and Salisbury 18 118 01 for the county seat. Elkton 4 774 66 and Eldorado 1 04 were among the smallest payments.
Delegates from Caroline Unit No. 29 prepare for Maryland American Legion Auxiliary convention in Ocean City registering at Jackson's Hall through Sept 11 with a $1 fee. A delegates luncheon is set for Sept 9 at George Washington Hotel, followed by a Memorial Service. Mrs. O E Roberts of Denton to seek Department Historian post.
At a August 27 1948 ceremony at Playtex Park International Latex Corporation President A N Spanel distributed several tons of silver dollars as a profit sharing bonus to factory personnel. Attended by Playtex salesmen Lt Governor E N Carvel Mayor J O Willis and other city officials the event featured a life size Tractor Trailer truck marked Sales Organization and Playtex Factory. Spanel described profits arising from a strong sales force and efficient production ensuring year round employment at Playtex Park.
