The House advanced the 36.1 billion omnibus appropriation to the Senate and approved a 16.7 billion defense supplemental. Together with debt interest and contracting authority, federal outlays for fiscal 1951 near 60 billion, with a possible rise to 70 billion including a future 10 billion defense ask. Army, Navy, and Air Force gains listed. ships, planes, troops, and Marine totals noted. Also approved are monthly living allowances for families of enlisted men, funded mostly by the service member.
The Denton Lions Club announces its annual Minstrel Show to be held Monday and Tuesday evenings on November 12 and 13, 1950. Committees have been appointed by President Winfield Nichols with Mr. Irvin Pop Smith returning as director.
Last Sunday's results show Trappe 13 beating Denton 11 and Ridgels 6 over St. Michaels 3. Broad Creek 9 defeated Queen Anne 1, with Oxford not scheduled.
This Sunday Denton travels to Ridgely for a doubleheader with first pitch at 1 30 p m. Ridgely, touted as the league’s most improved club, rose to fourth place and eyes a playoff berth. In other action Trappe beat St Michaels 13 11 as Diffie and Bartlette relieved for a wilder game after Blades and Baker started.
Greensboro AAL baseball closes regular season with Chestertown and Hardy on Sunday and Monday. Rock Hall leads while Greensboro holds second. Probable batteries Kerrick against Chestertown, Cox on Monday against Hardy, Giannatto catching.
Harrington volunteers host stock car races at Harrington Fair Grounds to raise money for a new ambulance for the Fire Company. Races start at 2 PM with rear seats limited. advance sale at the Fire House in Warrington. Children under 12 admitted for half price. general seating available.
At a 1924 state meeting, Caroline County recalls the start of public health nursing. A graduate nurse, funded by local clubs, established clinics, tuberculin work, and child hygiene efforts, with tireless fundraising via Tay Day and community support. The Health Department later grew to include a full-time officer, two nurses, and a clerk, aided by Red Cross and state funds.
The Grand Lodge Knights of Pythias and Grand Temple Pythian Sisters plan the third and forty third annual Maryland convention at Ocean Cliffs with 34 lodges and 19 temples represented. The event runs September 7 to 9 at the Atlantic Hotel Celestes tranmisses section. headquarter events include officer installations and joint services.
The Denton Chapter of the Junior Auxiliary of Memorial Hospital held its regular monthly meeting at the home of Mrs. C. P. Merrick Jr. New officers were announced with Mrs. Herman Keen as president and committees named for the coming year. The session closed after reading the Constitution and By-Laws.
County teachers will meet on September 1 at Caroline High School at 10 09 AM to welcome a new year. Superintendent W Stewart Fitzgerald will greet attendees as Jerome Framptom Jr president of the county board offers greetings. Dr Floyd Cromwell state supervisor will give the principal address. Faculty planning sessions follow for the opening on Tuesday September 5.
A Philadelphia man died and a nearby Denton resident was injured when a car failed to negotiate a curve on Route 3 south of Denton early Sunday. Harry Worrell Jr. died 14 hours after arriving at Memorial Hospital Easton from a ruptured bladder. Carlton Andrew of Denton, a passenger, sustained a broken collar bone. Warren Tapper, the driver from near Denton, was unharmed. Investigators await a conference with State's Attorney James A Wise. the crash occurred at about 4:30 a.m. and Trooper Emil Myers led the inquiry.
Goldsboro hosts the Peninsula Conference Evangelistic Advance planning session at Trinity Methodist Church on Friday Aug 23. Officers chosen include C A Yoho as chair and Luther Bennett Sr as secretary treasurer. Committee heads cover prayer attendance publicity visitation evangelism youth extension music transportation and entertainment.
The reopening of Maryland schools on September 5 brings posters across the state reading School's Open-Driving or Walking, Take It Easy. The Maryland State Police and Automobile Club of Maryland distribute posters and bumper strips to remind motorists to slow down as hundreds of children travel to and from school. The Baltimore City Police Department will participate as well.
The Del Mar Va Council plans its 1950 gathering at State Teachers College Salisbury from 2 30 p m to 9 06 p m to outline 1951 Scouting programs across 12 districts. President Paul D Lovett will preside as Horace Morgan lists expected attendees including district chairs and committee leaders.
With school opening in less than a week about ninety Denton Girl Scouts and Brownies have no meeting space. Two new troops will form, a Senior Scout troop and a Brownie troop, expanding Denton area Girl Scout presence to five troops from two Intermediate and one Brownie troop.
Reginald Wheatley son of the Rev and Mrs Grayson H Wheatley of Greensboro has been named in L A 3 for three years of Christian service in Latin America under sponsorship of the Methodist Church. He will sail soon for Cochabamba Bolivia for a teaching assignment in the American Institute. Wheatley was among 91 young men and women who completed the orientation course this summer at Hartford Conn and spent six weeks in intensive study with spiritual leaders and language and culture interpreters.
The local Draft Board office at 302 Market St Denton MD will be closed on Labor Day Monday Sept 4 and will reopen Tuesday through Thursday that week from 830 am to 5 pm.
The State Roads Commission awarded three highway projects. McLean Contracting of Baltimore bid $195,467 to replace a Chester River bridge on Route 290 at Crumpton. The Bituminous Construction Co. won $93,401 to improve 3.6 miles of road between Andersontown and Federalsburg. American Asphalt Products Co. bid $57,322 to stabilize and surface three miles of Route 245 between Leonardtown and Hollywood in St. Marys County.
