Civil Defense Unit Seeks Volunteers in Caroline County

Civil Defense Director Edward Sparks announces a nation wide campaign to register volunteers for civil defense under the banner Pledge For Home Defense. Local units will enroll registrants as Civil Defense members and assign duties during Armistice Day to Thanksgiving. Sparks cites Soviet atomic bombs, germ attack threats, and urges training and equipment to cut casualties by half.

Johnny Keene Receives Eagle Scout Award in Denton

Johnny Keene son of Mr and Mrs Herman Keene of Denton was thirteen years old this week and among the youngest in the Delmarva Peninsula to earn the Eagle Scout award. Rotary Club presented the badge as Horace Morgan praised the Scouts and family, noting community value of scouting.

Cohee Runs General Store In West Denton

G Clifton Cohee proprietor of West Denton Store born locally and later employed at Choptank Mills. He returned in 1929 to open a full line general store offering groceries meats hardware and notions with wife Florence son J Wilson and clerk J Wray Cohee. Located at the bridge in West Denton in the old Carroll Pastorfield stand.

P. T. A. Harvest Festival a Denton triumph

The Denton PTA Harvest Festival drew an estimated 800 attendees last Friday evening with games rides and exhibits. Prize winners across multiple categories included John Fuchs winning wheat and barley while Willie Closson took corn and Roger Adams peppers. Organizers credited parents teachers and children for the festival’s success.

Denton Community Club Meeting Canceled

The November 7 meeting of the Denton Community Club is canceled as ladies attend the Federation meeting in Hurlock. Maryland and Delaware forecast light precipitation this week with a cold Thursday and night, warming Friday then turning colder over the weekend. Temperatures will run 4 to 6 degrees below normal with normals around 60 in the day and mid 40s overnight. USPS schedule shows mail arriving at 5 20 am 10 30 am and 3 00 pm and leaving at 2 00 pm 4 00 pm and 5 45 pm with lobby closing at 9 00 pm.

Piney Branch County Accident Involving Warren and Hartman

A Federalsburg truck driven by Doris M. Warren was side swiped at Piney Branch by a Washington D C vehicle operated by Walter S. Hartman. Damages were about 600 dollars and both drivers were charged with failing to drive on their side. A separate crash north of Greensboro near old Route 313 involved Harry Gelof and John A. Smallwood with estimated damage 450 dollars and reckless driving charges.

Bodine to Exhibit in Easton on Bodine Day

Bodine Day at the Talbot County Free Library in Easton marks the November seventh opening of an exhibition of A Aubrey Bodine images. The Maryland photographer, honored in national salons, will attend a tea and autograph copies of his book My Maryland, with proceeds aiding Memorial Hospital.

West Denton Water Deliberations Tie to Well Drillers Action

The West Denton water issue centers on Maryland Broilers Inc and a July 1951 permit. The Department of Geology, Mines and Water Resources pressed for compliance with the September 11 order. the Attorney General was urged to act, then given time to conform. Maryland Broilers arranged a contract with Shannahan Artesian Well Co Inc to drill a compliant well, and permit 11234 was issued to Shannahan Ar for Maryland Broilers on October 21. The plant reportedly runs pumps 24 hours daily and the Sanitary Engineer weighed further steps.

Southern States Annual Meeting Welcomes Denton Delegate

George P. Wood will attend the 29th Southern States Annual Meeting in Richmond Virginia November 6 and 7 as official delegate from the Denton area. James A. Andrew of the Southern States Agency also attends. More than 1,500 people are expected. Highlights include the annual report by O E Zacharias Jr General Manager, 29 grand prizes in the Come N Win Contest, confirmation of four new board members, discussions, a talk by Edmund Harding and tours of the Southern States building and Richmond plants.

Salisbury State Teachers College Dinner Details

The annual Parent-Freshman-Faculty dinner at Salisbury State Teachers College will be Friday November 7 at six o clock. Conferences with parents and five to six faculty counselors share orientation and guidance program aims. Dean Howard E. Bosley leads the orientation with Mrs. Francis B. Fleming assisting. James F. Glenn will preside as toastmaster. Reverend Grayson Wheatley will give the invocation and Dr. Jessie L. Fleming directs music.

Altfather and Yeates Graduate From Farm College

Harold J. Altfather and Francis A. Yeates of Denton complete a three week training course in artificial breeding of cattle at Curtis Candy Company Farms College Cary Illinois. They are designated Herd Technicians in the Improved Stud Service and Altfather is named distributor of semen with Yeates as Herd Technician. Yeates gains the top graduation mark among 27 students nationwide.

Clendaniel Predicts Democratic Victory in County

George W. Clendaniel and eight district chairmen forecast a Democratic sweep in Tuesday polls. They credit voter enthusiasm and county prosperity under Stevenson and Sparkman, with Beck and other district leaders predicting record turnout and a clear party win.

The 1950 Census enumeration shows 18 234 residents in Caroline County with 9 160 males and 9 074 females. Whites totaled 14 772. Negroes 3 452. others 10. Median age 32.0. 11.5 percent age 65 plus. Children under 5 numbered 1 781. Adults 21 plus numbered 11 840. Of 6 779 males 14 plus, 4 627 were married. of 6 811 females 14 plus, 4 652 were married. There were 4 255 married couples living together, 3 995 in their own households, 260 in other households. Total households 5 528. average 3.28 persons.

Rotary District Conference Meets in Baltimore 1952

Plans are nearly complete for the 1952 Rotary District Conference in Baltimore November 16 and 17. James R. Wilson, Annapolis Rotary Conference Chairman, said Rotarians from 44 clubs in the 267th District will attend. S. Kendrick Guernsey, Past Rotary International President and Rotary Foundation Trustee, will speak. Conference sessions target service review and future activity plans at the Sheraton Belvedere with District Governor David S. Jenkins presiding.

New Diesel Locomotive Replaces Steam At Denton

A 1200 horsepower diesel locomotive replaces steam on the Denton line. The engine, with Engineer George Eickholz and Joseph Collins aboard, backs onto a Denton yard siding as W. T. Grimes serves as conductor. The Easton to Denton service began to cut power costs on October 17.
