Red Cross Officials Attend One Day State Convention
Caroline County Chapter of the American Red Cross sent officials to the State Convention at the District Chapter House in Baltimore. Attendees included President J O Knotts Executive Secretary Mildred Irwin and Directors Nona Medford Inez Long and Edwin Riley. The one day event featured seminars lectures and demonstrations. In the final assembly Dr Riley of Caroline County was named next year's general chairman.

UNICEF Halloween drive to aid world children grows
Maryland children will again collect pennies for UNICEF to aid kids worldwide. One penny buys milk or TB protection, five cents helps cure disease. In nine years UNICEF funds have aided over 70 million children in 70 countries. Maryland groups raised nearly $40,000 last Halloween and will ring doorbells again in orange UNICEF tags.

The Denton School PTA wrap up for 1959 60 reports 550 members enrolled after the first PTA meeting on Monday night October 12. Primary winners Miss Huber t kindergarten 80 percent, runner up Mrs Givens 72 percent. Elementary Miss Cannon fifth grade 74 percent, second Mrs Fisher fourth grade 69 percent, third Mrs Brooks third grade 68 percent. Junior High tie for first Miss Trice sixth grade and Mr Allison eighth grade at 68 percent. Most parents present were in Primary Mrs Fifield Elementary Miss Lawless Junior High Mr Allison.

At the monthly luncheon the Denton Chamber of Commerce approved the Christmas Committee’s plan for holiday hours and activities. Santa Claus Day will be Saturday November 28 with the Jolly Old Elf visiting Denton children through the Chamber, the Denton Volunteer Fire Co. and Dentonia Theatre. Denton merchants will stay open evenings from December 11 through 24 and close at 6 p.m. on the final date. Town decorations will vary from the usual. More details appear in a special article.

Brethren Home Coming Marks 75th Ridgely Church Anniversary
The Ridgely Church of the Brethren celebrated its 75th anniversary on Sunday October 25 drawing former members and friends from near and far. Rev Levi K Ziegler of Portland Maine delivered the morning message on Hither And Thence and a panel discussed church history and ongoing programs with ministers Rev J S Rittenhouse Rev Milton Royer Rev Alten McDaniel Rev Roy Judy Jr and others. The Call a music pageant closed the day with rededication notes. The church organized October 24 1884 in Boonsboro School House with 22 charter members and now counts former members serving worldwide as part of the Mardela District.

Caroline County sent a report to Maryland conference on Children and Youth noting parental neglect as a factor in delinquency but calling it largely paper delinquency. Roland Statum Found Guilty in Obscene Film Case
On Wednesday October 28 Roland Statum was tried and found guilty of showing obscene motion pictures at a barn like structure in the Third Election District known as The Green Door. He was fined 200 dollars and given 30 days in jail with an appeal filed to the Circuit Court. Attorney Layman J Redden represented the defendant.

County School Enrollment Sees About 50 Percent Jump
Enrollment in Caroline County schools rose near fifty percent above officials’ expectations this year. September 30 totals show 2,510 elementary and 1,824 secondary students, plus 4,334 in three centers and 62 kindergartners, totaling 4,396. Last year’s figures: 2,448 elementary, 1,642 secondary, 69 kindergartners.

Dedication and open house for the new North Carolina High School are planned for 3:00 p m on Sunday November 15. Dr David W Zimmerman assistant state superintendent of schools will speak. The school opened in September 1959 with 531 students in grades 9–12. Students come from Greensboro Ridgely and Denton former high schools. The project is the largest in the county building program with South Carolina High School to be built last and bid in spring to open September 1961 bringing together Preston and Federalsburg students.
