The device uses color change in small vials to measure radioactivity, is cheap to produce, and can be worn as neck tags or carried in a pencil-like container. It aims to measure gamma and X ray exposure after an atomic blast and has peacetime uses in calibrating radiation equipment and monitoring thyroid dose in hyperthyroidism treatment.
