Voluntary Diversion Of Wheat Acreage Encouraged
The signup period for wheat producers opened nationally on September 15 and runs through December 1 in all winter wheat counties with a separate 1962 signup for spring wheat. The 1962 stabilization program requires a 10 percent acreage reduction based on a national allotment of 55 million acres. Farmers with 1962 allotments or those with under 15 acres in three prior years learn payment rates for diverting wheat to conservation uses, with higher rates for additional diversion. The ASC Committee urges additional diversion beyond the minimum 10 percent, citing financial attractiveness, higher payments, and other benefits.
