School Television In Its Fourth Year Here

Instruction by television in Caro line County schools starts its fourth year of operation. We are a member of the Delmarva Educational Television Project a cooperative effort of ten school systems from Delaware Maryland and Virginia on the Delmarva Peninsula to make the medium of television available as an aid to classroom teachers. The program is presented through WBOC TV Salisbury each weekday afternoon from 1 30 to 3 00 oclock. During the past three years the use of television for classroom instruction has increased to our present offerings of music in grades one through four art in grades one through six science in grades four through six and French in grades five and six. These television classes do not relieve the classroom teacher of their responsibilities. The regular teachers are at all times responsible for the children in their class. These teachers prepare the children for the television class and teach the follow up classes between the television lessons. Thus the regular teachers can clarify misunderstandings and we teach if it is necessary to meet the individual needs of their pupils. Classes by television are however very helpful to the classroom teachers. The television teacher teaches one class each day. She uses the remainder of the day to prepare for this one class. She can therefore present a wealth of illustrative and reference material that would be impossible for classroom teachers to assemble. By the use of television many classes can benefit from the use of one set of equipment that would be much too expensive to buy for every class. Many classes can have a specialist to help them learn the subject being studied. It would not be possible to bring these specialists into so many classrooms by any other means. Television is a very important audio visual aid to the classroom and many educational opportunities and advantages are provided for our children by the use of television in the classroom.
