Maryland Farm Front This Week Cross Compliance 1962 Barley Program

Cross compliance links the 1962 barley feed program with the 1962 feed grain program for corn and grain sorghums. Barley producers earn a diversion payment by reducing barley acreage and diverting to conservation use, totaling an amount over 1959 and 1960 averages. If corn or grain sorghum are grown on the same farm, total barley and corn sorghum acres must not exceed 1959 1960 averages. Failure to meet cross compliance disqualifies barley diversion payments. Participation in the conservation program is required to be eligible for price support on the 1962 barley crop.

Polynesian tribe repays AEC overpaid claim in 1957

After nuclear tests in the Caroline Islands in 1957, the Atomic Energy Commission paid a native $200 he claimed due him. Months later his tribe found the claim unjust and returned the money to the AEC. They sent to Washington nine small canoes seven handbags four fans and other items as a token of integrity. They deserve a lasting memorial, perhaps in the Smithsonian, for their honesty and fairness over self-interest.
