The October Term of the Circuit Court for Caroline County opens next Monday with a docket of 30 civil and 8 criminal trials. The October Jury comprises residents from eight districts including Oscar Lord, Lillie Wilkerson, Edith Harris, and others across districts one through eight.
Denton Mayor Lawnace A. Moore proclaims October 5 1958 as Fire Prevention Week urging city departments schools and the Chamber of Commerce to lead a safety campaign and citizens to remove hazards for a safer community. Proclamation dated September 23 1958.
Rev George W Goodley to teach the Churchwide Mission Study Course The Middle East at First Methodist Church on four Thursdays Oct 9 16 23 30 from 730 to 9. Mr Goodley served as Army Chaplain in North Africa and the Middle East and will lead an inclusive class. The course offers credit through several denominations and invites all interested men and women.
Mt Olivet Church announces its annual Homecoming Service to be held Sunday October 5 at 2 30pm. The Trinity Methodist Church choir from Goldsboro will sing with Ronald Jester performing a solo on piano. The pianist is Mrs David King. Rev Omro Todd of Goldsboro will preach.
The Dentonia Theatre launches its fall and winter program with two shows nightly and the latest releases on the slate. Local events list Maryland Land Week activities October 5–11 featuring conservation talks by University Extension Forester Harry William Dengler at Camp Mardela and civic demonstrations by 4-H winners Mer ry Lee Engerman Donna Hill and Judy Thornton along with Civil Defense talk on Radioactive Fall-Out.
Christmas giving prompts local groups American Legion Denton Volunteer Fire Co and churches to collect repairable toys for veterans. Congregations urged to bring toys on Sunday October 5 or have volunteers pick them up at Denton Fire Co and American Legion Home. Toys must reach Perryville by October 15 for rehabilitation and redistribution to needy children.
The Treasurer's Report of the Mental Health Fund campaign conducted in Caroline County for 1958 notes a check sent to the State for 40 percent, 20 percent to National, leaving 40 percent to be used in the county.
The Caroline County 4-H Girls held their first County Council meeting for the new club year in the Extension Office Conference room with Council President Anne Plummer presiding. Officers elected included Claire Downs as president and Sarah Lane as vice president. Reports noted an Achievement Day success and Timonium Fair demonstrations. a new 17 girl club, The Little Homemakers, joined under leaders Mrs. F. M. Rogers and others. New club leadership expanded across several Denton clubs and a Harmony Club split created two age groups the Harmony Sunbeams and Humming Birds.
Land Week in Caroline County features judges Miss Dolores Lloyd of Dorchester County and Mr. Roscoe Brown of Talbot County for October 10 conservation exhibits. The Caroline Soil Conservation District shop opens October 8–9 for exhibit erection, with judging for FFA chapters Boy Scouts and others and prize money from 4 H Clubs FFA and Boy and Girl Scouts. Donald A. Williams will deliver the sole address. a chicken barbecue closes the day. Participants must register before 3 p.m. October 10 at the district shop on American Legion road.
On Sept 27 at Horse Shoe Inn Bertha Pippin reported disorderly conduct. Trooper Edward Jones investigated. Charles Schuyler faced two warrants from Pippin and Hayes for disturbing the peace and for assault and battery. A court trial found him guilty on both counts, with fines and costs totaling 51 dollars, six months suspended.
Trinity Methodist Church announces home coming services on October 12 with a morning service at 11 led by Pastor Omro Todd and a 2:30 afternoon service featuring guest speaker Rev Ray W Kirwan of Houston Del. Choirs sing, organist Mrs David King plays, WSCS ladies supply coffee and tea at the community hall.
General Chairman J Dallas Blades of Federalsburg announced the Caroline County United Fund drive will run from Monday Oct 27 through Saturday Nov 8. The Maryland State Police received an International Association of Chiefs of Police Certificate of Achievement for 1957 in police traffic supervision. The honor was acknowledged by IACP official John D. Holstrom to Gov. McKeldin, with ceremonies at Baltimore's Sheraton-Belvedere Hotel during the Traffic Safety Inventory luncheon. Maryland’s 89 percent performance rating topped 1956’s 86 and 1955’s 67, reflecting strength in personnel, training, and enforcement.
University of Maryland Extension engineer Guy Gienger urges active farm participation in Fire Prevention Week October 5 to 11. He cites farm fire losses at 152 million dollars last year from causes such as spontaneous ignition, faulty wiring, and improper storage. He advises hay curing, proper ventilation, wiring maintenance, lightning protection, and storing flammable liquids 40 feet from buildings, ending with the warning not to give a fire a place to start.
A large group of Caroline County Democrats accompanied statewide and local candidates led by Tawes on an all day tour visiting Dover Bridge Bethleham Preston Federalsburg Greensboro Goldsboro Henderson Marydel Ridgely and Denton. At a 250 person rally in Caroline High School the candidates urged votes for November 4 and the next bull roastOctober 11 was announced.

Frank S. Kish of Greensboro USN was set to return to Mayport Florida on October 1 aboard the USS Saratoga after an eight month Mediterranean cruise. The carrier served with the Sixth Fleet during fleet and NATO exercises and supported operations in Lebanon. Crewmembers visited Gibraltar Naples Genoa Barcelona Palma Cannes Athens and Rhodes.
