Chamber of Commerce members met to set Christmas plans for Denton. December 20 was named Santa Claus day with a Santa visit and kids entertainment at the movies. Garland lighting and traffic improvements were discussed to spread festive spirit and ease parking concerns.
A December 1 meeting at Salisbury State Teachers College will discuss the future of Delmarva broiler marketing. Four cooperative plants, growers, and friends will hear Dr. Raymond W. Miller, Dr. J. C. Huttar, and Jerome Kenney address cooperative marketing, with demonstrations on faulty scales.
The Peoples Bank of Denton mailed Christmas Savings Club checks totaling over twenty one thousand dollars this week. The bank promotes BUY AT HOME WHENEVER POSSIBLE and AWAY FROM HOME only when necessary to support local merchants who in turn offer lower prices and carry more goods.
The Denton Lions Club will present a fire prevention program to Denton High School students on December 2, 1947. Sponsored by about twenty Mutual Insurance Companies through the Sparks Club and Tri-State Mutual Agents Association, the display highlights common fire hazards as a leading prevention effort amid high fire losses nationwide. The program will also be shown at the Lions Club bi monthly meeting in the Community Club Building on Tuesday evening.
Denton V F W Soccer Club hosted Easton and won 6 to 2 as rain and mud slowed play then cleared. Bob Irwin led the Dentonians with multiple goals, supported by C Irwin and Lane, while Easton’s Marshall added a lone score.
The Chestertown Collegians, last year’s Eastern Shore Basketball League champions, composed of Washington College players, open the Mar Del League season against the Denton Bobcats at the Armory in Denton Monday night at 9. The game is pushed to 9 to accommodate the National Guard drill. Denton offers season tickets at a bargain, with savings per game for adults and students, valid for fourteen games. The Denton Chamber of Commerce promotes Denton via the Bobcats, who will play in Maryland and Delaware towns, with home games listed in local papers and radio.
The Mar-Del Basketball League kicks off next week with ten teams including two new entrants Chestertown Legionnaires and Camden Vets. A 28 game season runs through March ending in a four team playoff for the title.
Miss Julia Alloway mezzo soprano and accompanist John Elliott will offer a sacred concert at First Methodist Church Denton Sunday evening at 7 30 The concert features hymns and motets with Grace Methodist Church participants The program lasts about one hour and all are welcome
Mrs. O E Roberts of Denton historian of the Maryland American Legion Auxiliary and Mrs Marvin Smith and Mrs Robert Rattigan of Federalsburg attended the annual conference of presidents and secretaries of the auxiliary in the War Memorial Baltimore on November 23. A heavy program of work for the coming year was outlined and Caroline Unit invites county women to join and help Veterans and their families. Last year the local unit received a National Citation for membership by December 23 and seeks the same distinction again.
The Bridgewater College Varsity Women’s Quartet will present a sacred concert at Denton Church of the Brethren on November 27 at 8 00 p m as part of a Virginia Maryland Delaware tour with eight church programs and three radio broadcasts Other stops include Easton November 28 8 00 p m Greenbelt Westover Maryland November 29 8 00 p m Bethany Farmington Delaware November 30 11 00 a m and Ridgely November 30 3 00 p m A 15 minute Salisbury radio broadcast is set for Saturday November 29 at 5 00 p m
The Tri-County District dinner is set for Wednesday December 3 1947 at 6 30 p m in the Denton Armory. Roll calls will highlight sponsors from Queen Anne s Talbot and Caroline counties with Eagle Scout awards presented to W. Rembert Simpson Jr G Allen Whiteley and John H Holmes II. Toastmaster John W Noble Del Mar Va Council Scout Commissioner will lead the program followed by prayers welcomes and recognitions.
Farmers in Caroline County will vote by mail in November for community committeemen and delegates to the county convention to run the 1948 Agricultural Conservation Program. Ballots go to eligible voters and must be returned by December 8. Delegates meet December 11 to elect the county committee.
Eight Delmarva Peninsula servicemen killed in World War II arrived in New York aboard the U S Army Transport Robert Burns. The bodies were moved to the Philadelphia Quartermaster Depot for interment in private and national cemeteries per next of kin wishes. Names include Adkins Allston Horner Jester Morris Peterson Straughn and Black with hometowns Denton Cambridge Centreville and Bridgeville among others.
The C H S Senior Class play showcases Betty Beers as a hillbilly grandmother and Betty Brannigan played by Jean Bullock. Mervin Pentz stars as Dick Brannigan with Betty Eaves as Kaye Brannigan. Shirley Towers portrays Catalpa Tapp and Francis Treland is Mildad Tapp. Norman Sutton appears as Cyrus Scudder in this lively stage pageant.
State Board of Health imposes dairy production rules affecting Maryland farmers and distributors. Milkhouse requirements include water supply with heating, two cleaning tanks, metal racks, approved cooling, ventilation, and two trapped drains. Dairies under 80 gallons need a 10x16x8 milkhouse. 80 to 160 gallons require 12x18. over 160 gallons 14x20. A two room milk house is required if bottling.
