Denton National Bank mailed 480 Christmas Club members checks totaling 38060.00 on December 2. The bank notes this is the largest club distribution yet and exceeds last year by 12500. The board urges members to spend part and save part, suggesting savings or U S Savings Bonds like Series E to curb inflation and boost future purchasing power.
Greensboro Lions Club plans a Christmas celebration centered on the nativity of Christ. Chairman G. B. Hastings leads a committee reviewing proposals for a Dec 18 program with a 2 pm moving picture show for children, a high school pantomime, candy for youngsters, and an evening Christmas tree lighting plus community carols led by church choirs.
Miss Henny Hansen of Denmark will arrive in the United States on December 5 to spend six months in Maryland studying agricultural practices. An exchange visitor, she will two weeks at the University of Maryland for language brushing and acclimation before going to Denton, staying two weeks in Caroline County and spending Christmas holidays with Denton homemaker clubs.
Reports to Denton town officials show two more insanitary toilets eliminated in the North section by the principal local property owner during the past month. The owner reportedly has supplies and awaits help to extend sewer connections. Some independent property owners in the North section progress, others show no effort to cooperate. Our next report will detail these cases.
Washington College five opens the season with a 9 10 p m home game against the Flying Pentagons of Middletown at the Armory Saturday. The Bobcats host Middletown and celebrate Appreciation Night next Thursday with a full squad from coach Pop Roberts. Denton Kittens meet Felton girls team at 7 45 pm prior to the Washington game. A Mar Del Basketball season opener at Cecilton follows and a Bobcats Armory meeting is set for 8 30 pm Tuesday.
In Stewart Cup play at Caroline towns, Denton and Greensboro lost to Baltimore Clubs as a heavy rain and sleet storm drenched Schaube Park. Jim Belt led Denton with 5 goals while Greensboro's Davis Soccer Club won 6-2 after a 2-2 halftime draw.
Burial services for Pfe. C. Nevin Altfather, killed in the Battle of the Bulge Dec. 16, 1944, were held in Denton cemetery with Rev. Thomas J. Turkington and the American Legion. He enlisted into the Army nine months before his death. He is survived by his wife Collie Towers and three children, his parents Mr. and Mrs. John W. Allfather of Denton, three brothers Kenneth Harry and Harold, and three sisters Mrs. James Trice Mrs. Robert Gibson and Idamae Allfather.
The Peoples Bank of Denton Maryland has mailed Christmas Savings Club checks totaling 21,479.25 to 366 members. Bank urges members to save part of their check and open a larger account next year, noting this is a record distribution in the club’s history.
The Denton Lions Club Light Conservation Committee surveyed Denton Primary School lighting and found it very poor. They note the impact on pupils and cite prior eye tests. Caroline County Board of Education will review and may install experimental lights in one room before a full system replacement.
The Denton Unit of the Easton Hospital Auxiliary held its November 29 meeting at Mrs. Ormond Andrew’s home with hostesses Mrs. William Addington and Mrs. Andrew. Miss Stella Williams explained County Health Department duties and work, highlighting its community value. The group planned toy bags for the children's ward and decided to purchase a Singing cake stand for $1 to rent to the public.
The November meeting of the Girl Scout Troop Committee met at Mrs. T. C. Fleetwood’s home to discuss furnishing a new meeting room donated by Mr. Earl Crouse on Fifth Avenue Extended. Funds are limited. they appeal for loaned or donated furniture, especially chairs, to outfit the room. The girls will repair or repaint items to reuse old pieces.
In Caroline County adults show interest in classes across Greensboro Federalsburg and Denton. Greensboro hosts a typewriting and bookkeeping group meeting twice weekly with others eyeing mathematics. Federalsburg awaits two crafts classes taught by Walter Rau, while Denton seeks multiple subjects but requires at least fifteen enrollments. Nursing programs may be formed countywide, with details from high school principals or Fred Asilten at the Denton Board of Education office.
The Denton Volunteer Fire Co Inc held its regular annual meeting in the Fire House naming Edward H. Covell president and Thos H Baynard treasurer replacing Sherman L Tribbitt who retires after holding the post since 1922. New officers take posts early in January.
A Maryland public health message urges buying and using Christmas Seals to fight tuberculosis. It notes Maryland's high death rate, the availability of free chest clinics in every county, and the Eastern Shore’s higher prevalence, highlighting seals funding education research and rehab.

Greensboro Town Commission invites bids from qualified contractors to install sewers and appurtenances across about two miles opening western and eastern residential sites. Bids due at the Fire House by 8 p m January 3 with a public reading and award to the lowest bidder. Mayor Wright and trustees reserve right to reject bids. Project aims to spur a building boom as months ahead bring work in construction and road resurfacing of dirt streets.
