Banquet Celebrates 4 H Leaders At Ridgely School
Caroline County 4-H boys and girls gathered at Ridgely School on November 17 with 265 attendees. Connie Stoops of Hillsboro presided, Nancy Lister led singing, Jane Lister played piano, and Lois Fuchs gave a highlight talk. Seven leaders received years of service awards, while Lois Fuchs won an I Dare You award from the Danforth Foundation.

Two Drown As Car Drops In Choptank
Two people died Friday night when a car plunged through a Greensboro bridge guard rail into the Choptank River at about 9:30. Noble Melvin of Burlington New Jersey and Mary Bickling near Greensboro drowned in the wrecked front seat. three back seat passengers escaped. Mildred Hopkins of Felton Delaware was hospitalized with a fractured arm. Samuel Pinder and Rufus Spencer of Greensboro were uninjured. Police say the car was south on the Goldsboro Greensboro road, failed to turn, flipped into the water at high speed. Rescue attempts continued past midnight with the Greensboro Fire Company assisting. Dr. Dawson O. George attributed the deaths.

Meredith Wins Essay Prize in County Fire Prevention Contest
Philip Meredith, a sixth grade student at Federalsburg High School, won first prize in the 1955 Caroline County Fire Prevention Essay Contest. Lois Rainville and Joyce Robbins placed second and third, with cash awards, as the event honored home fire prevention. The judges lauded all participants, with prizes funded by the Caroline County Fireman's Association and local insurance agents.

Senator Layman J. Redden of Denton is among Maryland delegates for the National White House Conference on Education in Washington DC from November 26 to December 1, 1955. About 2,000 participants are expected, with 1,400 state delegates, and Maryland will be represented by 20 delegates and 5 staff. The conference will address six topics including school financing, teacher supply, and building needs, aiming to share experience and spur local and state education programs nationwide.

Maryland 4-H’er Wins Camp Trip in 1956
Mortimer L. Smedley Jr. of the C. A. N.4-H Club is named a state winner for a camp tale about the Maryland Conservation Camp in Garrett County in July. He earns an all-expense-free trip to the 1956 camp, joining A. R. Mariner II of Berlin, Worcester County. Wayne Bradley of the C. A. N. Club previously won a 1955 trip for writing about the 1954 camp experience.

Caroline County Bird Club Hears About State Unit Refuge Plan
Marvin Hewitt of Greensboro announced the Maryland Ornithological Society will be incorporated to obtain a land gift for a bird refuge. Percy Scudder distributed weed seeds for feeding birds and showcased a seed suet feeder. Plans discussed included the December 18 and 24 Christmas bird counts within a 15 mile area. A. Jerome Fletcher presented John James Audubon life history with slides. Jan 19 meeting in Denton will be arranged by Mrs. Poore and Mrs. Knotts. Cecil Kenney spoke at Talbot County Bird Club last Friday.

Christmas Seals Fight Plague Of Tuberculosis All Over Country
The 1955 Christmas Seal Sale marks the 49th annual effort to fund tuberculosis prevention and treatment. Miss Emily Bissell of Wilmington inspired the program in 1907, with publicity from Leigh Mitchell Hodges. The Denton Community Club meeting is postponed from Dec 2 to Dec 9 due to a First Methodist Church bazaar.
