Notice requests all letters to Santa to be published be submitted no later than December 4, 1952. The item appears as a historical public notice urging timely submission for inclusion in the newspaper.
Santa Claus will visit Greensboro on December 13 with 1:30 PM films, followed by a parade to the Fire House where candy and fruit await children. Lions Club members and local business leaders will distribute treats, as Main Street and Railroad Ave are lit with decorations. The Christmas Celebration Committee is led by Russell H. Wright with Arthur Brumbaugh and Charles Bilbrough among members.
The Old Denton National Bank in Denton and Caroline County has served the community for more than 71 years under its 1881 charter. It continues to provide sound banking with personal service, listing present officers J Roland Chaffinch president and J Lester Evera gamn vice president, plus directors and staff across branches.
Mr Sam Mellits will give children a free matinee on Thanksgiving Day November 27 at 2 p m featuring leading short subjects cartoons comedys musicals and other attractions. Maryland and Delaware showers and mild Thursday fair and colder Friday and Saturday. Warmer Sunday with showers likely. Temperatures 4 to 7 degrees above normal with highs 46 to 53 and lows in the mid 30s.
The 4 H banquet at the Denton Armory on November 13 drew nearly 300 4 H members parents and leaders. Activities included a pantomime solos talks and magician numbers with awards presented by Extension Agents F M Rogers and Bessie Spaf ford to members for outstanding work and to long serving leaders.
The Denton Lions Club held its sixth annual Charter Night and Ladies Night at the Brick Hotel on Monday evening, November 17. Ninety seven guests enjoyed a turkey dinner before a program featuring an invocation by Lion Norman Raleigh, a Lions choir directed by William Wunderlich, announcements by President Roy Adams, and greetings by District Governor John Smith of District 22 B. Rudy Saxon entertained with thought projection and telepathy. Officers listed include Roy Adams president, Walter G. Kerslake first vice president, James E. Harris second vice president, Tayloe Lewis third vice president, Lindsay Clendaniel secretary, D Ralph Hors ey treasurer, William Wunderlich tail Twister, Cesar Coalla lion tamer.
L. Tayloe Lewis is named Supervisor and Mildred N. Irwin as Assistant Supervisor of the Ground Observer Corps to be established by the U S Air Force here. Major B F Vaughn urges urgent observer posts and details seven assistants each, with 12 hours duty weekly, and 12 auxiliaries per post. Lions Rotary and American Legion members pledge help with a Carter Ave post under Harold Towers and Fred Stafford.
The Church of the Brethren hosts the union Thanksgiving service at 10 30 a m on November 27 Rev Dr John E French will preach the sermon Everyone is invited to attend.
B Schwanda and Sons celebrated 15 years at the Denton plant with a large buffet, music, and dancing at the Denton Armory. About 120 people attended, including local civic leaders and ten guests from New York. Congratulatory addresses by Judge J DeWeese Carter Senator Layman J Redden Delegate John W Logan and Denton Chamber president Robert W Downes Jr praised the company’s community service.
Mrs. Rose Mundt of Preston reports her sixth son, Eugene Mundt, has enlisted in the U S Air Force on November 13. A Preston High School 1949 graduate, he previously worked for Dupont in Seaford Delaware. His brother Charles is also an airman.
Rural Letter Carriers Association and Ladies Auxiliary of nine Eastern Shore counties held a Fall dinner at Marydel Community Hall on Saturday evening November fifteen with eighty two attendees. National President Bun Raley and National Secretary John W Emeigh spoke. State officers present included President Jonathan Jones and Secretary Fred Kelly. Auxiliary officers led by President Chas Bilbrough attended along with Cancer Fund chair Wm Irwin and others from Maryland groups.
Christmas Seals are back with a rallying call to buy their colorful seals as a down payment for health. The brief appeals that money spent funds protection against tuberculosis, the leading infectious killer, and warns TB can affect anyone, urging readers to act now.
The Farm Bureau Discussion Group 2 met at the Nafzingers home on Tuesday evening November 18 with William Gardner presiding. New officers for 1953 include George Lowe as chairman Martin Voss as vice chairman Mrs Robert Dulin as secretary Mrs Martin Voss as discussion leader and Frank Zeigler as assistant discussion leader.
The Denton Community Club invites members to a 2 p m meeting on Friday November 21 at the Club House. Guest speaker Miss Laura Cornell of Lewes Delaware will discuss Art Appreciation in Regards to Design Color and Lighting using her paintings as illustrations. Hostesses are Mrs Calvert Merriken Mrs R N Hitchens Miss Mary Hobbs and Miss Louise Gray with Mrs Austin Murphy chairing the program.
The annual Institute on Public and Professional Relations was held at State Teachers College Salisbury on November 19 from 3 30 to 8 00 p m Senator Lay man J Redden served as consul tant during the discussion on state wide public responsibility for education The Maryland State Teachers Association executive secretary Milson C Raver chaired the discussion The institute promotes active education for youth and is sponsored by the Maryland State Teachers College Salisbury boards of Education and county teachers associations of six lower Eastern Shore counties James F Glenn chaired planning and Morris C Jones Jr a Greensboro High School counselor served on the committee Redden attended the dinner session.
Dr. Frederick W. Smith of Baltimore, superintendent of the Maryland and Delaware Temperance League, will speak at a Grace Methodist Church union service Sunday evening November 23 at 7 30. He lectures widely on alcoholic education and has taught at Yale. He will discuss Requirements For Good Citizenship.
A trained falcon was found on Clinton Edwards farm near Greensboro on Wednesday afternoon November 12. The bird wore a leather hood leg straps and a four foot leash. State game warden T Dukes Roe notes the falcon is similar in size to a marsh hawk but darker. Edwards is caring for it until the owner is located.
Commissioner Thomas B R Mudd reports the holiday crackdown halted 748 motorists for speeding over July 4, 5, and 6. Of those, 330 were Maryland residents, underscoring the effect of the fifteen day suspension rule enacted ahead of the Fourth of July and Labor Day weekends.
Notice announces the journal will publish earlier next week and asks correspondents and advertisers to have copy ready a day earlier. The office and plant will be closed all day Thanksgiving Day November 27 1952.
