Caroline Boy Hosts Army Secretary In Germany Visit

Lt. Col. Wesley J. Simmons, commander of the Seventh U. S. Army Non-Commissioned Officers Academy, hosted Cyrus R. Vance, Secretary of the Army, in Bad Toelz Germany. The April visit capped a 10 day tour of Army installations in Europe. Simmons and his wife have a daughter Jan born in Tokyo in 1948.

Used Clothing Center Opens in Denton Church

Denton community gains a new used clothing center sponsored by the Woman's Club of Denton. Space in St. Luke's Methodist Frame Building will store donated clothing and shoes for needy families, fire or theft survivors. Review of Maryland's Traffic Fatalities

Nineteen people died on Maryland highways last week per the Maryland State Police weekly survey an alarming rise from the prior week. Nine were passengers seven drivers and three pedestrians with alcohol and speed each factors in four deaths and driver error in all but the pedestrian cases. Major G E Davidson urged curb risk noting passenger attention shifts can distract drivers.

Pinewood Derby Finals Held by Choptank District Cubs

The Choptank District of the Del Mar Vacouncil Boy Scouts held its Pinewood Derby finals on May 18 at 2 30 pm sponsored by VFW Post 5118 in Easton. Thirty nine Cubs competed as Packs 137 147 150 189 190 234 265 292 325 390 were represented. Winners were Jimmy Willoughby Pack 265 Denton first Donald Stewart Pack 190 Easton second and Tommy Meredith Pack 137 Federalsburg third. Their cars advance to a national run at the University of Illinois this fall with over 150 spectators present for the event.

Less Freight Restrictions Sought For Farm Produce

Maryland Farm Bureau urged lifting minimum rate rules for bulk and agricultural commodities to let farmers benefit from new technology and faster rate reductions. The group pressed lawmakers Beall and Friedel during Commerce Committee hearings, warning that added restrictions would cause chaos in the marketing system and hurt farmers' market access.

Choptank River Boat Races Draw A Record Crowd

A Sunday hydroplane meet on the Choptank River at Denton drew a record turnout as about 75 pilots competed in ASBA sanctioned races. Don Christy of Baltimore dominated the day, winning the top three races in A Stock Hydros, B Stock Hydros, and C Stock Hydros, with multiple other pilots from Maryland, New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvania placing in various stock and outboard classes.

State Trooper Activity During The Past Week

State Police report incidents from the past week including a burglary at Julius Littlejohn’s freezer on Houston Branch Road Federalsburg with 50 cleaned chickens stolen and freezer key missing under investigation. On May 15 at Henderson Route 311 a 1959 Ford driven by George Dawson Robinson collided with Carlton Gooden’s Service Station, triggering a fire destroying both vehicle and station with $15,000 damage. Robinson charged with reckless driving.
