Homer O. Schmidt is recommended to Governor Tawes for appointment to succeed the late A Webster Todd as Caroline County Commissioner. A 44 year old farmer from Friendship, Schmidt served in WWII with the 76th Infantry, earning the Silver Star Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He has led PTA groups and church activities and sits with his wife Louise and six children.

Suburban Propane Open House Draws Local Visitors
Suburban Propane Gas Corp held a three day Open House on old Centreville Road attracting 1800 to 2000 visitors. Prizes included a $200 major appliance won by Annie Ireland of Denton. Bernz-O-Matic grills awarded to B F Johnson Sr of Denton and Ernest Tull of Federalsburg. a pair of outdoor lamps to R A Porter of St Michaels. The event showcased a new appliance line and refreshments were served. The company serves Queen Annes, Talbot, Caroline and Dorchester Counties. The 4 H and F F A Junior Broiler Production Show occurred May 9 at North Caroline High School with 160 attending barbecue. Sharon Hegesi, a Queen Annes 4 H member, won first. Lawrence Hignutt Jr., Linda Hignutt, David Gadow, and Alan Holsinger placed in top ten. Caroline County participants included Michael McQuate, Roger Griep, Roland Todd, Christine Jackson, Gerald Sutton, John Muceller, Bert Enslen and Dale Harrison. The Broiler program runs eight weeks from March, with 42 entrants from Kent and Queen Annes Counties. Caroline County Poultry Farms and Esskay Plant donated a crate of chickens for a free meal. Judges were Chas Marshall, J O Hardin, and James Nicholson from University of Maryland Poultry Department.

United Fund of Caroline County Holds Annual Meeting
The United Fund of Caroline County held its annual meeting on May 14 at 8 p m in Choptank Electric Coop with J R Chaffinch Jr presiding. Total on hand was 20 587 44 of a 22 700 goal, distributed to eight agencies, plus recommendations to follow up on unpaid pledges. New directors and officers were elected for three and one year terms respectively, with Leon Craft as president and J Dallas Blades praised for leadership.
