Quillen Named New Bank Director at Denton National
W Clark Quillen was unanimously appointed a director of The Denton National Bank on May 14 to fill the vacancy caused by the death of J Frank Lane. A Goldsboro merchant and lifelong resident, he is the son of Andrew D and Clara Quillen. He graduated from Greensboro High School and Beacom Business College in 1927, then ran Lane’s general merchandising business since 1937. He married Margaret H Lane about nine years ago and will serve the bank with his broad county business experience.

Caroline County Soil District Supervisors set their May meeting for May 21 at 8 p m in Ridgely Fire Hall. Chairman H H Rieck invites farmers and families to attend. After the session, questions may be asked of the supervisors or Soil Conservation and Extension Service. A movie on Soil Conservation Practices will be shown. Last month the group met in Henderson.

Ninetieth Birthday Tea Honors Denton Woman
Mrs. Janie M. Smith of Denton widow of Dr. Alfred Smith a Methodist minister was guest of honor at a tea hosted by daughter Mrs. J Owen Knotts for her ninetieth birthday. Attendees included Dr. and Mrs. Paul Smith of Wilmington and Baltimore relatives. Mrs. Smith, a Baltimore native long linked with the Eastern Shore, earned a MA in 1881 and wrote on Elizabeth Barrett Browning. She has two surviving children and several grandchildren. She reads for pleasure while living alone in an apartment.

Major J DeWeese Carter Receives Army Commendation
Discharged Major J DeWeese Carter officially separated from the Service at Ft. Meade Maryland after returning from the Pacific. He served with the Judge Advocate General's Department at Camp Pickett Virginia where he earned the Army Commendation Medal for Trial Judge Advocate work in General Court Martial prosecutions of POWs. He participated in the Luzon Campaign for the Liberation of the Philippines earning a Bronze Battle Star and served on General MacArthur’s staff. Carter will resume his law practice in Denton.

About 250 members of Local B-1307, Brotherhood of Electrical Workers voted Friday night to consider strike after nearly a month of failed negotiations. A Denton court house event featured an amphibious “duck” truck from Army recruiting.
