Man Burns To Death In Norfolk Fire Monday Night
Loubet Cahoon of Norfolk, 36, was fatally burned in a house fire on East Market Street while the owners were away. He had arrived to work on a bridge project in New Bridge and died in the hallway after neighbors reported flames. Fire damage estimated at 7000 dollars. Cahoon's body was sent to North Carolina for burial. he was survived by his wife and three adopted children.

Lane vetoes slot machine legislation in Maryland counties
Gov. W. Preston Lane vetoed 106 gambling bills from the latest session, stopping county level legalization of slot machines in Ocean City and Worcester County and other counties. He cited risks of widespread gambling and urged maintaining state policy, while signing exceptions for pinball licensing in Kent Queen Annes and Caroline Counties and bingo in Kent. The governor vetoed 39 bills and signed 40 others as the session closed, part of Maryland's postwar legislative activity.

Sandy Point Fire Delays Bay Ferry
A wooden creosoted piling at the Sandy Point slip was severely damaged by a fire that halted Sandy Point Matapeake ferry service for about two hours. A navy fireboat crash boats and five Anne Arundel County units fought the blaze, bringing it under control near noon. The new ferry Herbert R. O Conor with 70 vehicles and passengers could not dock and anchored offshore after its 9 A M run from Matapeake while the Gov. Harry W. Nice had left the Sandy Point pier shortly before the fire was spotted. Clouds of smoke filled the area as crews battled the blaze. Continued on Page 12.
