Special Session To Get Raffle Bill Maryland to meet May 25

Maryland's General Assembly will convene a special session May 25 to decide on a $2,101,654 ten percent cost of living increase for State employees. Governor Lane will also seek a $500,000 emergency Welfare Department appropriation. Senate President Byrnes says the Legislative Council has bills ready and will be introduced. Lane notes 6,429 employees would be affected. A committee led by Treasurer Miles proposed the ten percent raise after study. Patterson, head of Welfare, will discuss the emergency funds and is prepared to seek more than $500,000. The council will likely screen proposals within a week.

Baltimore Man To Again Head Optometrists In Salisbury

Maryland Optometric Association nominated Dr. G William Seabold of Baltimore for a fourth term as president with no opposition. Eastern Shore nominees included Dr. Alton G Billmeier of Denton and Dr. Clifton G White of Salisbury to the executive council. About 50 optometrists and wives attended the banquet and conference at the Wicomico Hotel.

ESPS Open House At Vienna Plant Attracts 400

The Eastern Shore Public Service Company hosted an open house at the Vienna Generating Plant in Vienna Maryland drawing about 400 visitors. Tours explained electricity production and distribution from Cape Charles Virginia to Smyrna Delaware with most municipal plants excluded. Attendees viewed the plant sectioning system allowing automatic switches between sections. Two new sections are in operation another nearly finished and a final section expected before 1951.

Cancer Clinic Dates By City With Early Detection Message

In Salisbury May 26 at 1 p.m. call 620. In Denton May 20 at 1 30 p.m. call 56. In Elkton May 19 at 2 p.m. call 255. Surgery X ray and Radium are the only recognized cancer treatments. Cancer can be cured through early detection.

Hartly and Camden-Wyoming tied for Mar Del lead

Denton and Chestertown jumble the standings as Hartly and Camden-Wyoming share the league lead after Hardy and Camden-Wyoming’s wins. Denton, Chestertown, Houston and Greensboro sit 1 1, Felton and Rock Hall still wait for their first win. Next week Hartly visits Camden-Wyoming and Denton travels to Greensboro while Rock Hall visits Chestertown and Felton hosts Houston.

Liverpool Reds Sign Albert Stubbins For 65 Thousand

Albert Stubbins, the great center forward of Liverpool Reds, was bought from Newcastle S C for 65000 dollars. The Liverpool squad, British champions, may be seen in Baltimore next Thursday night May 20 at Bugle Field facing a picked All Star team.

Girl Scouts Banquet Highlights Denton Troops Event

Denton Girl Scout troops held a Mother and Daughter Banquet at Fellowship Hall First Methodist Church with about seventy guests. Stella Williams presided as Toast mistress, a play titled The Brownie Story was staged, and Mrs. Austin Roberts spoke on Lone Scout Troops and Camp Winooski located near North East Maryland. Camp runs July 11 to 30 with fees of 15 dollars per ten days plus a 3 dollar registration. Registrations are first come first served and parents may visit Sundays 3 to 5. Contact Mrs. Theodore Orme for inquiries. girls must be at least ten.

Flood Control Hearing Planned at Federalsburg High School

Congressman Edward T Miller was informed that a hearing will be held by the District Engineer Army Balto Md on plans for flood control of Marshy Hope Creek. The meeting in Federalsburg High School auditorium is set for May 18, 1948 at 1 00 pm. All interested parties may attend and express views on the extent and need for improvement.

Time To Buy Party From Friehofer Baking Co

The William Friehofer Baking Co launched its Time to Buy selling program with a Gay Nineties party attended by about two hundred employees and wives. Men wore derby hats and mustaches while each woman received a corsage. Miss Freihofer sang Stephen Foster pieces in period attire as Mr. Ross Miller and associates delivered remarks.

Firemen Parade Ends Denton Convention Milestone

Denton hosted the Delmarva Volunteer Firemen Association as more than 200 firefighters and auxiliary members gathered for meetings and a gala parade ending the nineteenth annual convention. Maryland Delaware and Virginia crews participated with 55 companies in a large parade. Awards honored bands corps and auxiliaries with Smyrna Laurel Seaford Cambridge and Onancock among top winners. Mayor Finn led the events and a memorial service was held for former firemen.

Maryland State Police will begin selective patrols on state highways starting May 8 1948 to curb willful drivers who use mirrors to spot patrols and risk safety. Plainclothes troopers will work with marked cars via radio to intercept violators, aiming to prevent chases and improve night operations while gaining support from motor groups.

Scholarship Tests Scheduled At Denton Balance of Maryland Scholarships

Applicants for scholarships at four Maryland schools will take an examination led by W Stewart Fitzgerald superintendent of Caroline County schools. The test will be at the board of education office in Denton on May 22 at 10 a.m. Scholarships include two for boys at Johns Hopkins School of Engineering one for a girl at Western Maryland College two for boys at St Johns College and one for a girl at St Marys Seminary in St Marys County.
