Apply talc and 1 lb arsenate of lead as soon as beetles appear. Dust thoroughly through the growing season to control beetles without harming plants. If lead arsenate is unavailable use calcium arsenate at the same ratio. Newly set plants may be dipped in a mixture of 3 teaspoonfuls arsenate to a gallon of water before planting, ensuring the solution dries completely. Planting in hot sun can scorch foliage and cause loss.
