Opening day ceremonies will be staged at Schaub Park on Sunday as the Denton team opens its home season against Camden-Wyoming. The Denton Firemen's Band will provide music and the mayor may toss the first ball. The town sings Take Me Out To The Bail Game as fans head to Schaub Park.
Hardy, defending champions, edged Chestertown 6 to 4 in 10 innings as the Mar Del league opened its eighth season. Big Joe Vodvarka pitched for Hardy, while Chestertown’s Lynch fanned 11 in a battle highlighted by Hartly’s 2 runs in the 10th inning and multi player contributions from both teams. Denton crushed Houston Libbys 17 to 1 behind Harry Hughes and Boykin, with Cy Cole 4-for-4 and Denton amassing 22 hits. Camden-Wyoming showed strength, while Hardy introduced several youthful newcomers in a season starter attracting overflow crowds.
The Eastern Shore Baseball League begins its third postwar season with inaugurals at Milford and Rehoboth Del Easton and Federalsburg Md Friday night On the next night Dover Seaford Del Cambridge Salisbury Md will stage games to open the season with a slate of contests across the region.
The Eastern Shore Baseball League selects umpires for 1948 after training at Bill McGowan's Umpire School in Florida. President Dallas D. Culver emphasizes support for umpires and focus on playing baseball. Openers set with Cambridge at Milford and Seaford at Rehoboth, plus other matchups. Eight clubs pre season pace strong with Seaford and Rehoboth led by holdover managers.
Eastern Shore District of the Maryland Federation of Women’s Clubs will hold its fifty-second semi annual meeting at Ocean City’s Methodist Church hosted by the Ocean City Women’s Club. District officers and speakers include Miss Concepcion Aquila.
The Maryland Chapter National Association of Postmasters and Maryland Branch of the National Association of Postal Supervisors will hold a joint annual convention at Ocean City on May 25 and 26 at the Hotel Royalton. Notable guests include Vincent C. Burke and Clifton C. Garner with postal officials C. F. Chatto L. B. Schoonover and M. J. McAuliffe. Delaware postmasters and Accomac Northampton counties invited. event framed as the Eastern Shore’s standout convention.
Seaford Symphonic Choir directed by Dr. Webster Schmidt presents a spring concert at First Methodist Church on Monday evening May 10 at 8 15. The program closes National Music Week with remarks on music elevating character and life and includes lines from Dr Henry van Dyke about music lifting the soul.
S. Scott Beck, 34 year old Chester town attorney and former naval officer, won Maryland’s First Congressional District Democratic primary with 7,687 votes in seven of nine Eastern Shore counties. Earl Bennett carried Dorchester with 5,761 votes, Richardson won Worcester with 1,285, Loreman Jr. failed to carry any county. Edward T. Miller was unopposed in the Republican primary.
The Liverpool Reds, champions of 1947 48, meet a Baltimore All Star team from the Americans and S C at Eagle Field in Baltimore Thursday May 20 at 8 30 pm. Admission is 1 50 including tax.
Youth program goal C. Percival Merrick, president of the local Rotary Club, appoints a committee to study summer recreation for youth. The softball league group includes Carlton Mandrell, Robert Downes, Reese Brown, Mr. Fleetwood and Herman Keen.
The nineteenth annual Del Mar Va Volunteer Firemen's Association session will be in Denton Maryland May 11 12 with a dinner executive board meeting and full day program at the Armory on Tuesday and a 7 30 p.m parade followed by a ball on Wednesday The event draws fire units from Virginia Delaware and Maryland and features parade routes prizes and a large gathering of volunteers and auxiliary units.
Caroline High School Glee Club presents a spring concert Friday May 7 at 8 00 pm in the high school auditorium as part of National Music Week. Under Miss Genevieve Rugh the program features eight selections a soprano solo by Shirley Towers two piano numbers by Jean Fleming a vocal duet and a boys quintet with listed members. Glee Club roster includes named sopranos altos and altos. Admission at door 14 cents students 25 cents adults. public invited.
