Long Marsh Ditch Drainage Project Described
A 54 000 acre runoff area with 25 percent poorly drained is outlined. Major works include Long Marsh Ditch at 14.5 miles draining 20 square miles across Caroline and Queen Anne's counties, Beaver Dam Ditch 11.7 miles draining 12.3 square miles, Jarman's Branch 8.1 miles draining 25 square miles, and Broad Way Ditch 6.1 miles draining 7.1 square miles in Caroline. Long Marsh is emphasized as most important. the ditch, dug long ago by slave labor, sits in rich bottom land prone to overflows post rain. Dense timber and briars line the ditch near Baltimore Commer to Bridgetown, with 50 feet cleared from banks for three miles, plus three more miles cleared from KKane's Cross Roads bridge south. On Dec 28, 1935, a 4 yard drag line on a caterpillar mounted machine was used.
