County Sets 1956 57 Tax Rate At $1.50 Per $100

County Commissioners met in special session Friday June 12 to adopt a budget for the 1956 57 year. The levy raises assessable basis by 160690 with total budget 654318.77. State rate 10.9 cents per 100 and county tax rate set at 1.50. Detailed expenditures listed include salaries, court costs, elections, and services. Continued on page 5.

Onancock Girl Crowned Miss Delmarva IX

Joyce Harris of Onancock Va was crowned Miss Delmarva IX after judging in Ocean City Md. Five semi finalists from Maryland Delaware and Virginia were named along with state winners Linda Lynch Ocean City Md Susan Murray Georgetown Del Sandra McCabe Selbysville Va and Joyce Harris who won Miss Popularity.

Caroline County Homemakers Attend Short Course

Caroline County homemakers were among 2000 women at the Rural Women’s Short Course June 15 to 23 on the University of Maryland campus. The 30th year of College Week for Women included dormitory living, meals, classes, assemblies, and discussions on homemaking and world affairs.

Brown graduates from Geldey Beacom Business School

Joseph Charles Brown, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest J. Brown of Denton, joined 169 classmates in the Geldey Beacom School of Business Wilmington Delaware semiannual graduation June 22. The 170 graduates included 32 veterans under the Korean Educational Bill. Principal speaker was James M. Tunnell Jr., Delaware State Bar Association president. Brown earned an Associate in Arts degree in Accounting and Business Administration.

Greensboro Fourth of July Celebration promises largest ever

The Greensboro Lions Club leads a full day of activities at the ball park starting 9:30 a.m. with a Little League game for ages 6 to 16, followed by games, races, free ice cream, a river bank fishing derby, and a married men vs girls softball match. An adults’ horse shoe contest and a coon chase unfold before a final ball game Greensboro vs Trenderson. The parade, co sponsored by the Greensboro Volunteer Fire Co and Lions Club, features floats, bands, VEW, Red Men, Boy Scouts and a unit from Dover Air Base, ending at carnival grounds with fireworks. Farm Bureau Picnic Set At Garland Lake July 19

Caroline County Farm Bureau plans an all day picnic at Goatland Lake near Denton on July 19. Joint event with Associated Women aims to include farmers wives and children with contests for babies and county farm queen, who may advance to the State fair in Timonum in August. Queen must be unmarried 16 to 18, on farms of at least three acres, with home economics training. Babies contest led by Mrs Went and Mrs Holden, with staff at OntSale in charge. event targets farm children ages 6 months to 4 years.

Homemakers Receive Their Honor Certificates

About 166 homemakers earned certificates for a year of attendance at the Rural Women's Short Course held on the University of Maryland campus. Forty six received silver pins for years of attendance. The event marked the 30th year of the course with some 1,000 registered and 300 visitors on graduation day.

Sheriff Andrew Takes 2 Prisoners To State Gaols

Sheriff Andrew last week escorted Ollie Bolden to the Maryland Penitentiary and Joseph Meekins to the Maryland House of Correction. Bolden was sentenced by the Circuit Court to 18 years for second degree murder, while Meekins was sentenced by Magistrate L Claude Howard of Federalsburg.

Church School Scrolls Awarded At Closing Program

Certificates were given at the Vacation Church School closing at First Methodist Church Denton. Sixty-two children enrolled. 52 earned certificates for excellent work with at most one absence during the 10 day sessions. Teachers and assistants from the kindergarten primary and junior departments are named. a refreshment chairman organized the event.

Maryland Girls State Embraces Future Leaders in Annapolis

In Annapolis the 1956 Maryland Girls State session gathers 113 high school juniors including six from Caroline County. Run by the American Legion Auxiliary the program trains girls in city county and state government with two selected for Girls Nation in Washington. It aims to foster justice freedom and democracy shaping future communities states and nation. (Continued on page 5)
