Commissioner Mudd warns speeding motorists during the Fourth of July holidays face a minimum 15 day license suspension. He cites speeding as a major cause of highway injuries and fatalities and calls the three day holiday enforcement a deterrent to reduce accidents.
The Nuttle Lumber and Coal Co born in 1930 from a merger of Hughes Lumber and Coal Co and the B. Frank Cole Co grows with Delmarva. Now 175 members strong with main yard in Denton and branches in Easton Cambridge and St Michaels. Office bearers include Elias W Nuttle Frank L R Nuttle Philip E W Nuttle and J Frank Connelly. Operations cover retail distribution of lumber millwork paint hardware and related merchandise with several mills and a large fleet of about 75 vehicles and equipment.
A large Delmarva turnout at Selbyville for the second meeting of the Eastern Shore Poultry Growers Exchange outlines aims to assist growers processors and buyers. On Tuesday 360 000 birds were sold with potential to reach the million mark. a small $1 per thousand fee logs listings enabling buyers to locate flocks meeting specs. Twenty five temporary directors were elected to craft by laws as officers list Louis Shockley William Stevenson Roy Twilley Curtis Steen E P Richardson and H H Dukes.
Rising temperatures grip Maryland and Delaware with highs several degrees above normal and little relief. Only a slight chance of scattered afternoon or evening thunder showers as the period progresses.
Hobbs Maryland post office will be discontinued June 30 1952 after serving since 1889. Star Route service ended in 1896 with railroad arrival. Longtime postmasters Tilghman Chaffinch J Roland Chaffinch L H Thomas served since 1918. Rural Carrier Paul Shoemaker to serve patrons from Denton Route 1.
Caroline County 4 H girls attend Camp Mardela from June 23 to 27 with nautical themed activities. The program titled The Steamboat Whistle features cabins named for historic Choptank boats, crafts, recreation, swimming at Camp Todd, and Bean Soup in a Bean Hole directed by staff including Sonny Callahan of Denton.
Commissioner Thomas B. R. Mudd announced Maryland will switch from old car tags to a letter before number system to handle rising vehicle totals. With almost 800,000 cars and a potential 1,000,000 licenses, the state will replace old plates, using new full-size tags and perhaps assign series to Baltimore City and surrounding counties.
Governor McKeldin ordered Former Senator George L. Radcliffe to lead a Maryland wide panel for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge dedication set for July 30, with plans for a double ceremony near the Sandy Point toll plaza and Kent Island shoreline. Truman invited, and roads officials back the schedule barring delays.
The 1951 52 season of the Talbot Music Club ended on Tuesday night June 17 at the home of Dr and Mrs Emsley Coble Peach blossom. Officers for the coming year were elected: Elbert Garey president Mrs Cleveland Smith vice president Mrs Elbert Garey corresponding secretary Mrs Gilbert Rue recording secretary and Edward H Headley treasurer. Committees were named including Arthur Higginbottom publicity Mrs Ralph H Wiley house Currie Hardin and Mrs Charles Howard program Eth el Peters Miss Harriet Coble Miss Elinor Hughes. Guest artists Anita Rue Ankeney mezzo soprano and Edna Jellinek Cloud lutist performed with Rue Ankeney accompanied by her mother Mrs Rue.
James Hayman 14 of Williston died by drowning after entering Mill Pond to bathe with George Wood nearby. Local residents and Denton volunteers attempted resuscitation. Coroner Dr. D O George ruled death at 6 15 p m Friday. Separate crash incident injured six in a car rear struck by a truck near Deep Shore Road. Occupants included Gilmore Sherwood of Baltimore and Andrew and Theresa Derwart among others. Funeral held in Cambridge. Continued on page 12.
The WSCS of First Methodist Church met in Fellowship Hall on Tuesday evening with a program on Children's Work led by Mrs. Walter G. Kerslake Jr assisted by Miss Madge Jump Miss Annie Weer and Mrs. John E. French. A choir of Primary and Junior Fellowship children performed with Sarah Lane Dorothy Billmeier Ann Billmeier Betty Jane Sutton Roy Slaughter Sarah Van Dyke Margaret Kerslake Beverly Towers Betty Jean Carroll Greta Friedel Lois Slaughter with Mary Ann Fleetwood and Janet Lou Butler. Dr. Elsie Billmeier played piano. Miss Weer reported on Deaconess Home work in Wilmington and Mrs. Kerslake on Primary and Junior Fellowship work.
At about 6:00 am Saturday Paul Maloney observed a red parachute tied to a weather balloon lofted over his cornfield. The balloon burst and the parachute with its indicator landed near his home. trooper Myers retrieved it Monday evening and sent it to military authorities. This marks Maloney’s fourth indicator find, previously recovered near Williston and at his current Tuckahoe Neck farm.
Laverty Steele, local manager of the Denton office of the Eastern Shore Public Service Co., died after a heart attack Wednesday evening while en route to Memorial Hospital in Easton. Funeral arrangements had not been completed at press time.
The local Draft Board office at 302 Market Street, Denton, will be closed July 1 to July 11 inclusive. Men required to register during that period may register at Mr. James Wise's office in Denton.
Eastern Shore Area Directors and Emergency Welfare Services held a meeting in Easton on Tuesday June 10 at 10 a.m. Attendees from Caroline County included Mrs. Nelson Covey Deputy EW S and Mrs. Beulah L. Carter Assistant Deputy EW S. Mr. L. W. Tipton was State Staff Coordinator and Ruth Surratt Administrative Assistant attended. J Milton Patterson State Deputy EW S presided and outlined service fundamentals. The group discussed progress reports and requested written plans showing locations and homeless capacity to integrate into a disaster response.
Edwin Love president of the C H S regional student council was elected a delegate to the thirteenth annual national student council convention in Evanston Illinois last week This marks the first CHS delegate He visited Comiskey Park where the White Sox and Athletics split a double header He was selected for Boys State at Annapolis by the Denton Rotary Club but dates conflicted with the convention
With the Fourth of July falling on next Friday, the business office and plant of the Journal will be closed for a long weekend, both Friday and Saturday.
The United States Civil Service Commission announces an open competitive examination for Substitute Clerk Carrier vacancies in the Denton Maryland Post Office. Salary is $1,614 per hour. Apply to the Fourth U S Civil Service Region in Washington DC. examination will follow after receipt deadline. Information from Mr T Clayton Long, Secretary, Board of Examiners, Denton Post Office.
Dr James Franklin Wright Cmdr USN retired of Denton dies after a months long illness in Philadelphia Naval Hospital on June 24. Born September 11 1910 he attended Denton public schools Johns Hopkins University then Jefferson Medical College graduating in 1935 with honors and top grades on state medical exams.
A Denton elder sister Mrs Florence George Perry age ninety three and her brother John L George age ninety one will mark birthdays in July and June respectively. Born at Smyrna before the Civil War they grew up near Denton. Perry lives with son in law and daughter Wolf while George enjoys a garden and has relatives in Denton. Next oldest is Mrs Susie Bell of Baltimore aged eighty seven.
