Miss Delmarva Semi Finalists Chosen At Laurel Event

Twelve semi finalists for the Miss Delmarva XII title were named after a Laurel selection as part of the Delmarva Chicken Festival. The pageant drew 22 contestants, with Miss Helen Lee Pittard of Georgetown present. The School of Missions planning at Wesley College in Dover runs July 12 to 17, featuring four study tracks taught by noted instructors and assisted by regional church leaders.

Southern States Held Meeting in Denton Yesterday

Members of the Southern States Denton Cooperative Board of Directors and the local Farm Home Advisory Committee plus their spouses met at the Brick Hotel in Denton to plan the 1959 Southern States Cooperative annual membership meeting. They nominated candidates for vacancies on both bodies with elections to occur at a later membership meeting. Retiring directors Clifton Wright and Harold Adams of Federalsburg and retiring advisory committee members Mrs. James Cannon and Mrs. Marion D. Wood of Denton were announced.

First Illegal Possession Case Under A New Law

Robert Orvel Walls was convicted for illegal possession of alcoholic beverages by a minor under 21, the first conviction under a 1959 act. Beverly Jackson was fined 100 for DUI. John E. Dorrell was found guilty of driving on a revoked license with plates, fines partially suspended. Several dated historical notes follow.

Camp Wright Enters 29th Year Serving Shore Youth

Camp Wright, two miles south of the Bay Bridge near Matapeake, marks its 29th year serving boys and girls ages seven to fourteen. Open to all, applications require parish approval. Two camping periods run in July with girls four weeks and boys three weeks, cabins grouped by age. Registration and catalogs available from Rev. Joseph E. James. Last year Denton children attended, including Rusty Orme and Gary Greenley. Also notes meetings for Veterans of World War One and wheat marketing card reminders for early July.

Vacation Bible School Closing Exercises at Pilgrim Holiness Church

The Daily Vacation Bible School at Pilgrim Holiness Church concludes Sunday evening June 28 at 7 30 with a program featuring 62 enrolled pupils. Craft work and achievements will be on display. About 40 will receive perfect attendance awards and certificates will go to those missing two evenings. Director Mrs Edward Wheatley leads the staff with several assistants and refreshments provided each evening. public invited.

Beauchamp Hot To Win Daytona Firecracker 250

Beauchamp seeks the Daytona Firecracker 250 win on July 4 as the final NASCAR late model stock car race of 1959. The Harlan Iowa veteran, driving a 1959 Ford Thunderbird formerly run by Fritz Wilson, faces rivals including Lee Petty and Joe Weatherly. Organizers expect speeds around 140 mph on the fast Daytona track with three T-Birds entered and tire tests completed by Pistone, Beauchamp, and Weatherly. The 11 a.m. start on Independence Day marks a premier speed classic on the calendar.

Denton Water Tank Gets Its Periodical Cleaning

The Denton water tank underwent a thorough cleaning by out of town experts over Monday to Wednesday. The tank was drained and water from pumps entered the mains causing irregular pressure at times. Water may have issued from fire hydrants to regulate pressure and prevent mains bursts. This periodic job occurs every five to six years to improve service for residents.

Little Homemakers Entertain Their Mothers

The Little Homemakers 4-H Club hosted a mothers event on June 11 at 10 30 am in Fellowship Hall First Methodist Church. Sixteen members two Junior Leaders plus four leaders and several committee members contributed to decorations refreshments and exhibits tied to ABCs of sewing and project reports.

Girl Scout Camp Todd Opens For Season On Lake Todd

Camp Todd near Denton Maryland officially opened on June 8 with 259 Girl Scouts and 30 adults from 11 towns. Activities include camping, swimming, hikes, nature studies, and conservation projects. Regular season starts June 28 with two week sessions for scouts across the Eastern Shore.
