Bridge Preferred Over Tunnel For Chesapeake Bay Crossing
The Governor's Highway Advisory Council and the State Roads Commission recommended a bridge over a tunnel to cross the Chesapeake Bay. They cited lower initial and long run costs, shorter construction, wider roadway, and lower upkeep. Estimated bridge cost $35 million versus $44.43 million for the tunnel, with annual maintenance costs $20,000 vs $286,000. Construction times are 2 years 8 months for the bridge and 3 years 6 months for the tunnel. Roadway delineation will use reflecting markers. the distance shoreline to shoreline favors the bridge.
