Delmarva Chicken Festival plans brighten Salisbury event
Plans for the second annual Delmarva Chicken Festival in Salisbury July 12 to 14 include a National Chicken Cooking contest with a $250 cash prize plus an electric range for the winner and $125 cash plus an electric range for second place. Third and fourth receive $75 and $50 and merchandise prizes. Contestants include Mrs. Van Leer Stephany Seaford Del Mrs. Sarah Major Painter Va Mrs. Joanna Cato Salisbury Md Mrs. Katie Go Hastings Wilmington Mrs. Sarah Lombardo Salisbury and Mrs. Neilson McMahan Federalsburg all over sixteen and not professional cooks. The Queen contest changes place preliminaries at Memorial Field Salisbury Tuesday eight pm finals Wednesday afternoon with one finalist from each state Delaware Maryland Virginia and a queen chosen to receive a $750 college scholarship or $500 cash. Other state winners receive $200 each. Miss Betty Belle Edwards Ono ley Va was an early entrant. A post queen dance follows.

They plan to meet winter needs with preserved fruits vegetables and meats raised on home farms. 1948 state champion Pauline Wessel of Laurel earned a trip to Chicago and a Howard county medal of honor along with other district winners. The Greensboro Volunteer Fire Company launches a ten day fair and carnival on June 30 to July 11 featuring parades exhibitions and entertainment. A Chevrolet Fleetline Sedan will be awarded to the winning ticket holder. The event honors the town while fundraising for new fire fighting equipment and apparatus rehabilitation led by E J Pierson and assisted by a large committee including Mrs Wilbur Carroll and 55 Ladies Auxiliary members. Mayor Russell H Wright urged donations to support essential safety services.

Hit-Run Driver Held in Maryland Fatality Case
Harvey Fischer, 20, a colored man, is jailed in Queen Anne's County charged with a hit-and-run death of Albert Bordley near Matapeake last Wednesday morning. Sheriff Oscar Tarr said bail is 1000 dollars and a preliminary hearing is set for June 23. State Trooper W H Massey investigates. Choptank Cooperative Opens New Headquarters Building
The Choptank Electric Cooperative has moved into its new Denton headquarter office on Route 404. An open house is set for June 20 from 1 to 3 p.m. The cooperative, formed in 1938 to deliver rural electric service on Maryland's Eastern Shore, now serves over 7700 farms and homes. A June 8 bid from McKinley Construction to build 108 miles of new rural lines and 40 miles of rephasing from the Princess Anne substation aims to serve 414 new members and enhance existing service. The eight-member board includes President H A Moore and Secretary Treasurer H H Nuttle, with Olin S. Davis as vice president and Francis E. Yeoman as manager.

Plane Crashes Near Matapeake Pilot Walks Away
The Piper Cub pilot Albert W. Miller of Washington DC was slightly cut on the head when he struck a telephone line during a landing at Kentmore Park field near Matapeake Sunday about 6 pm. State Police Trooper Massey reported the half-owner suffered a head cut but escaped serious injury as the aircraft was damaged in the impact. Continued on Page 12.
