Bay Stewardess Killed At Hillsboro

A 25 year old bay ferry stewardess identified as Bessie Elizabeth Green of Chester Maryland was shot and killed at a Hillsboro area gas station Tuesday evening after fleeing from a car that stopped to buy gasoline. Alfred Grimes also of Chester was arrested at the scene and jailed for investigation.

Willis and Covell Co. Progress Highlighted in Seven Years

Willis and Covell Co. established in Denton 1945 and incorporated 1946. Edward H. Covell Jr. is president with J McKenney Willis Jr. as vice-president. The firm, on the railroad near the ice plant, runs four trucks and two service cars, provides grinding and mixing services, and operates a modern grain elevator with a new addition under construction to boost sheller and truck lift capacity for ear corn. They supply livestock and poultry feeds, dairy cattle nutrition, farm and field seeds, and Purina advisory services through John Ireland.

Civic Clubs To Meet At Camp Todd

The Rotary Club of Denton and the Denton Lions Club will hold a joint meeting at Camp Todd near Williston as guests of the Girl Scouts next Tuesday evening June 17. A delicious menu is promised by the girls and all members are urged to attend.

Caroline Post No 29 elected officers for the 1952 53 year in the American Legion of Caroline County on June 5. Officers named include Commander Harry Hubbard and 1st vice commander Paul Shoemaker. Delegates to Baltimore convention July 9 12 were Steve Brown Harry Jopp Samuel Jopp and others. Only 40 of 229 members attended urging wider support for the Legion.

Bird Club Story Praises Starling As Farm Helper

A Caroline County Bird Club meeting highlighted benefits of starling to farmers. Mrs Voss objected to a starling nesting on Martin Voss’s perch, leading to the bird’s death. Dissection revealed nine cutworms in its stomach, underscoring the nuisance’s unexpected value to agriculture.

Health Center Dedication Slated For July 11th

Harry H. Rieck of the Caroline County Health Association announced that the new Health Center will be dedicated on July 11 at 7:00 p m. Dr H A B Dunning will be guest speaker. Funds came from Caroline Mountains donors, County Commissioners, and the Federal Government. Under Mr Rieck the building program is complete with modern equipment.

The Denton commissioners announce extensive spraying of the town with DDT to combat flies and mosquitoes, stating the current solution is stronger than before and that spraying will continue throughout the summer. Contributions will be credited.

X ray Unit To Be in County This Month

Mrs. Wilbert L. Merriken announces a county tuberculosis X ray survey by the State units. The mobile unit will visit Greensboro Denton Marydel Henderson Mount Zion with three day per month coverage for six months. The program stresses regular x rays to detect TB earlier.

Special Defense Course At University Of Delaware

The University of Delaware and the State Department of Civil Defense offer a Summer School course on the Survey of American Rights and Responsibilities with emphasis on Civil Defense. Model Plane Club Demonstrates for Kiddies Day

The Model Plane Club of Denton will demonstrate model plane flight technique and control during the American Legion Carnival’s Kiddies Day. Flights begin at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday June 14 and 21 as members operate several aircraft for all to see. a thrilling display of speed and daring for young and old.

Fitzgerald Named To New Four Year Term

W Stewart Fitzgerald who succeeded Benjamin Willis as superintendent of Caroline County schools about 12 years ago has been appointed to another four year term. Since reappointment he has bought a home on Second Street in town. The board reorganized with Marvin H. Smith of Federalsburg as president and Howard Harris of Preston as vice president. Fitzgerald serves as secretary and treasurer. Other board members are David W. King of Goldsboro who succeeded G Linden Duffey of Denton, Roger R. Ringgold of St Michaels, and Thompson Swing of Ridgely.

Robert G. Breen of the Baltimore Sunpapers reported on Denton clerk James A. Trazzare, rug hooking champion of the Kent and Sussex Fair at Harrington, who creates own designs and draws steady demand. He also does chair caning and ages well in public regard, with The Journal congratulating him as a fine citizen.

Delaware Twister Destroys Chicken Houses In Sussex

A freak twister in Sussex County Delaware demolished three chicken houses owned by John A Williams and damaged farms of Grace Dennis and Emory Williamson. Hundreds of chickens died, with over 500 broilers killed as houses collapsed. No injuries occurred and farms suffered minor damage to outbuildings and trees. Weather also brought heavy rain and hail to nearby areas with no casualties.

Dr Daniel Z Gibson president of Washington College addressed 23 Caroline High School graduates in Denton last week stressing the art of living and pursuing ideals. He compared ditch digging and study to art and urged students to uphold a set of blue china as a goal. The service included invocation, prayers, a glee club performance and solos by Janet Hoffman, Jean Fleming and Peggy Callahan.
