Lukewarm Laodicea and the suburban church critique
In a discussion of Revelation chapters two and three, the piece argues against viewing the seven churches as a fixed church history map. It describes Laodicea as a metaphor for lukewarm, wealthy, middle class churches, particularly suburban ones, and warns that such clubs lack true saving purpose and spiritual vitality. The author cites Winter’s Suburban Captivity of the Churches to illustrate how modern congregations resemble Laodicea and emphasizes that God loves all churches but does not approve of complacent, financially self-sufficient ones.
