Bancroft Gherardi of AT&T told the Society of Automotive Engineers that the era's challenge is distribution of plenty, not creation. He said production advances meet needs, and scientists engineers now face solvable distribution problems, promising vast future opportunities to engineers and their civilizational contributions.

Edwin F Hill reports stockholders of American Telephone and Telegraph rose to 700,851 in 1932 from 614,903 with about 135,000 Bell System employees as stockholders. Women gained faster than men and gains were largest in the southwest northwest mountain and south, while New England showed the smallest increase. Foreign-resident stockholders rose nearly as fast as those in the United States. Walter S Gifford says first quarter 1933 saw fewer disconnections and fewer new telephones installed causing a net loss of 310,000 phones. by March 31 there were 13,150,000 Bell System phones in service, 2,225,000 below 1930 peak. Long distance calls fell 20 percent from a year earlier. Overall earnings per AT&T share for Q1 1933 ran about 2.00, versus 5.96 for all of 1932. AT&T and subsidiary earnings differed from Western Electric’s deficit.
