The life sized Liberty Bell replica weighing over a ton will visit Caroline County on June 15 as part of the Independence Savings Bonds Drive. State Chairman Joseph P. Healy says the bell will tour every county before the drive ends July fourth with unveiling ceremonies led by County Chairman W. E. Unger and a patriotic program. The drive is backed by national industry leaders and copper companies contributing six bells to visit all 48 states, DC, Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.

New Dover Stores Adopt Friday Evening Hours
Dover merchants approve a new schedule to open Friday evenings and close Saturday evenings. Starting Friday June 9, stores will stay open until 9 PM on Friday and close at 3 30 PM on Saturday. The change, approved May 1 by the Mercantile Division of the Dover Chamber of Commerce, aims to better serve shoppers. Stores will continue the long standing practice of closing Wednesdays from June through August, effective June 7.

Denton Chamber of Commerce secretary John Wood Logan announced that the National Leather Goods Company of Philadelphia seeks 10 000 to 15 000 square feet of Denton factory space. They run branches in Dallas Boston Chicago and Los Angeles and would employ about 60 women. The C of C also fields interest from a Miami food processor for warehouse and rail siding space. The chamber meets the last Monday of each month at 8 PM in the Firehouse.

To Activate Naval Unit In Centreville Area
Commander Wirt B. Bartlett USNR of Centreville received orders to activate a composite Voluntary Naval Reserve unit for Queen Annes Caroline Talbot and Kent counties. Power strike averted on Maryland Eastern Shore
A power strike threatening the Eastern Shore was called off by 6:30 PM after Gilbert S. McCutcheon, a federal conciliator, announced negotiations settled the disputed points between Eastern Shore Public Service Company and Local No. 1307 of the IBEW. The nine county Maryland shore plus parts of Delaware and Virginia served by the company faced no immediate outage as details of a new contract were not released. Negotiations since May 3 addressed job classifications and a 4 cent hourly wage offer, which the union found unacceptable, with unfair labor practice charges filed with the NLRB in Baltimore.

Noble Dies in Frederica Nursing Home
William Washington Noble 82, long time Caroline County farmer from Denton, died last Thursday in a Frederica, Delaware nursing home. He is survived by son Clement of Wyoming and daughters Mrs Edward Lane of Baltimore and Mrs Ruth Watson of Summit, New Jersey. Funeral at J. Virgil Moore and Son Funeral Home, Denton Cemetery burial. Rockwood Finley Coleman 69 died May 26 on Bethlehem Harmony road after years of blindness. He’s survived by wife Effie Coleman and five daughters and four sons with ties to Wilmington, Rhodesdale, Baltimore, Bloxom, Easton, Preston, and Wilmington.
