Names of Shore Places Puzzle the Historians
A Philadelphia Inquirer correspondent notes Atlantic County names show hit or miss origins. Brigantine north of Atlantic City owes its name to a wrecked brigantine. Wrangleboro vanished into Port Republic. Bargaintown links to early real estate buyers. The piece contrasts this with Indian, Spanish, and Colonial naming traditions. Silver Salmon of Gaspe Shores Draws Anglers
The Gaspe region from Matapedia to Baie des Chaleurs hosts the silver salmon, king of North Atlantic waters, from May through August. Cascapedia, Matapedia, and Escoumenac rivers draw sportsmen to their pools and rapids as road access via the new Per ron Boulevard makes the area easily reachable for fishing camps and motor sites. Landing a 15 pound salmon after a forty minute tussle leaves anglers returning yearly to enjoy the old world atmosphere and scenic landscape. Recent provincial road and environmental work boost the region’s appeal.
