Eastern Shore League teams struggle with rain soaked schedule
Weather kept six clubs idle for six days, leaving a congested path to Labor Day and a likely 112-game season. Dover Orioles report ten postponed games while Cambridge, Pocomoke, Centreville, and others chase a first or second division spot as the pennant battle tightens. Wayne Lomas pitched a no hitter for Centreville, joining Johnny Swank of Dover as the league’s two no hitters this season. The circuit added Frank Wisner as umpire, and major moves saw Johnny Wittig sold from the Baltimore Orioles to the New York Giants for about $20,000. Future results hinge on continued wins as the home stretch nears.

Plants resisting Japanese beetle attack guidance
Walter R. Ballard of the University of Maryland Extension Service notes that many trees and shrubs resist beetle damage. He cites a list of practically immune species including gingko, pines, maples, oaks, hollies, azaleas, rhododendrons, and privet, plus vines like English ivy. He urges selecting durable varieties and explains that some trees like the American elm remain highly valued despite risk, deserving cultivation and protection.
